Gananoque.
Gananoque sits at the western edge of the Thousand Islands archipelago on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River, where the Gananoque River reaches the river — the gateway town to the central Admiralty Islands and Lake Fleet Islands cluster of Thousand Islands National Park.
The Gananoque Municipal Marina at 21 Bay Road is the closest mainland boat-access point to those island clusters, identified as such by Parks Canada; the 9-route Thousand Islands Paddling Trail, coordinated by the Frontenac Arch Biosphere from Kingston downstream to Brockville, runs through Gananoque waters at its central node. The 38 km separated, paved 1000 Islands Parkway Bike Path runs east from town along the Thousand Islands Parkway to Butternut Bay as a section of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail.
Inside town, the 12 km Gananoque Trail System connects Joel Stone Heritage Park, Confederation Park, and Kinsmen Park along the Gananoque River across three return-to-trailhead loops. The Thousand Islands Playhouse occupies the heritage 1909 Gananoque Canoe Club on the waterfront, and the 1000 Islands History Museum sits on the former site of the 1889 Thousand Island Railway Station.
Gananoque sits on traditional Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee territory.

Hiking
The Gananoque Trail System carries a 12 km perimeter network within town divided into three return-to-trailhead loops: the Lions Loop (4.3 km, north via the old rail line through Kinsmen Park to the Hudson Bridge and Confederation Park, with bicycle and wheelchair-accessible sections), the River Loop (5.0 km, threading the white pine plantation, boardwalk, Grasshopper Park, Joel Stone Park, and Town Marina), and the Rogers Loop (5.9 km, north past Stocking Hill Creek bridge and the old race track to Town Hall Park). About 5 km east on the Thousand Islands Parkway, the Landon Bay Centre — managed by the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Foundation — adds the 5 km Donevan Trail and the Lookout Trail above the St. Lawrence.

The Gananoque Municipal Marina at 21 Bay Road is the closest mainland boat-access point for the central Admiralty Islands and Lake Fleet Islands cluster of Thousand Islands National Park, identified as such by Parks Canada — and the central node on the Frontenac Arch Biosphere's nine-route Thousand Islands Paddling Trail from Kingston downstream to Brockville. Sheltered bays and granite islands topped with windswept pines open to the south and east of the marina; Thousand Islands National Park's paddler-access cabins and campsites lie on the islands themselves, accessed by boat only and bookable through Parks Canada. The St. Lawrence shipping channel and ferry routes cross the same waters paddlers travel.

The Gananoque Municipal Marina is the primary Canadian-side launch town for Thousand Islands sightseeing in the central archipelago, with cruise corridor running east toward Boldt Castle on Heart Island in U.S. waters near Alexandria Bay, NY. From the marina, recreational power boating reaches the Admiralty Islands and Lake Fleet Islands clusters of Thousand Islands National Park. Stopovers at Boldt Castle require a passport or NEXUS card because Heart Island is U.S. territory and U.S. Customs and Border Protection clears passengers on the cruises.

The Thousand Islands stretch of the St. Lawrence River off Gananoque sits within Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 20, supporting smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and the muskellunge fishery the area is known for. Inland, the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority publishes lake fact sheets for the Gananoque River watershed lakes — Charleston Lake, Gananoque Lake, Lyndhurst Lake, Lower Beverley Lake, Upper Beverley Lake, Red Horse Lake, and Singleton Lake — which carry bass, walleye, and pike under the regional regulations.

The Thousand Islands Playhouse occupies the heritage 1909 Gananoque Canoe Club on the St. Lawrence waterfront — the 360-seat Springer Theatre converted from the canoe club in 1982, and the Firehall Theatre added in 2004 in the 1913 Gananoque Armoury. The 1000 Islands History Museum (formerly the Arthur Child Heritage Museum, founded 1995) sits on the former site of the 1889 Thousand Island Railway Station. Joel Stone Heritage Park on the waterfront commemorates the Loyalist founder, who established a sawmill on the west bank of the Gananoque River in 1789, with cannon, a War of 1812 memorial, and a bronze diorama of the town as it stood in 1812.
