Nature & Discovery.
Gananoque sits inside the Frontenac Arch Biosphere, a UNESCO biosphere reserve covering the Thousand Islands and the Canadian Shield projection that meets the Adirondacks across the St. Lawrence.
The Frontenac Arch Biosphere has documented more than 250 bird species, 53 mammal species, 17 amphibian species, 15 snake species, and 98 fish species across the reserve.
The brief.
The biosphere claims attach to the reserve as a whole — covering Westport south to the St. Lawrence and east across the Frontenac Arch corridor — but the Gananoque-anchored substrate is concentrated at Landon Bay and along the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority's Gananoque River watershed.
Landon Bay Centre, ~5 km east on the Thousand Islands Parkway, has osprey nesting boxes, beaver dams, and the Lookout Trail above the river. The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority publishes lake fact sheets for Gananoque River watershed lakes — Charleston Lake, Gananoque Lake, Lyndhurst Lake, Red Horse Lake, Singleton Lake, and the Lower and Upper Beverley Lakes — across the rural watershed northeast of town.
Spring and fall migration through the Frontenac Arch flyway are the strongest birding windows.
