Heritage & Culture.
The Thousand Islands Playhouse occupies the heritage 1909 Gananoque Canoe Club on the St. Lawrence waterfront — the 360-seat Springer Theatre converted from the canoe club in 1982, and the Firehall Theatre added in 2004 in the 1913 Gananoque Armoury.
Across the downtown core, the 1000 Islands History Museum sits on the former site of the 1889 Thousand Island Railway Station, a few blocks from Joel Stone Heritage Park on the waterfront.
The brief.
Most of the heritage cluster sits on or just off the downtown waterfront and is walkable from the Town Marina and the Gananoque Trail System loops. The Thousand Islands Playhouse main season runs roughly May through October; the Springer Theatre at 185 South Street and the Firehall Theatre run separate programming through the season.
The 1000 Islands History Museum (formerly the Arthur Child Heritage Museum, founded 1995) traces the Thousand Islands and Gananoque story through the museum's permanent gallery and rotating exhibits. Joel Stone Heritage Park on the waterfront commemorates the Loyalist founder, who established a sawmill on the west bank of the Gananoque River in 1789 — the park has three cannon, a War of 1812 memorial, and a bronze diorama of the town as it stood in 1812.
The Town Hall and Visitor Centre at 10 King Street East anchor the downtown heritage walking tours.
