Centre Wellington.
Centre Wellington is a Wellington County township anchored by the twin limestone mill towns of Fergus and Elora at the confluence of the Grand and Irvine rivers. The Grand River cuts a 22-metre limestone canyon — the Elora Gorge — through the township centre, with Elora Gorge Conservation Area on the canyon rim and the Elora Quarry Conservation Area, a former limestone quarry now a swimming hole, just downstream.
Upstream of Fergus, Belwood Lake reservoir backs up behind the Shand Dam — completed in 1942 as the first multi-purpose dam in Canada — and the cold-water releases feed one of the better-known tailwater brown trout fisheries in southern Ontario from Shand Dam down to West Montrose. The Elora Cataract Trailway runs 47 kilometres east from Elora to Cataract for cycling and walking, the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games has run annually since 1946, and the Wellington County Museum and Archives sits in the 1877 House of Industry between the two towns as a National Historic Site.
Most of it sits a short drive north of Guelph.

Hiking
Elora Gorge Conservation Area carries gorge-rim and floodplain trails on 350 hectares straddling the Grand-Irvine confluence, with viewpoints down into the limestone canyon and the Tooth of Time outcrop visible from Victoria Park in Elora. The Elora Cataract Trailway begins on the western edge of Elora and runs 47 kilometres east through Fergus and on toward Caledon — the Centre Wellington stretch is the township-eastern segment between Elora and the Erin boundary. Templin Gardens in Fergus carries a short riverside walk above the Grand.

The downtowns of Fergus and Elora are walkable 19th-century limestone mill-town cores on the Grand River — Mill Street and Metcalfe Street in Elora overlook the gorge-edge falls; St. Andrew Street in Fergus runs along the river above the dam. Templin Gardens steps down from the Fergus river bank, and Victoria Park sits on the Elora gorge rim above the Grand-Irvine confluence. Both downtowns are walkable in a short visit and connect to the Elora Cataract Trailway corridor on their eastern edges.

Two GRCA frontcountry campgrounds anchor the township: Elora Gorge Conservation Area sits on the canyon rim with the tube run, gorge trails, and the Quarry just downstream, and Belwood Lake Conservation Area sits on the reservoir with the lake beach, fishing, and flatwater paddling. Both run May through October with reservable sites; Belwood is the quieter of the two.

Elora Gorge Conservation Area runs interpretive signage along the gorge-rim trails and seasonal GRCA programming on the canyon ecology, and the Belwood Lake reservoir is the quieter wildlife corner of the township — eagles, ospreys, and waterfowl move through seasonally on the open water. Wellington County Museum grounds, between Fergus and Elora, run a small heritage-trail loop with interpretive panels.

The Elora Cataract Trailway is the regional cycling backbone — 47 kilometres on the abandoned former railway corridor from Elora east to Cataract in Caledon, with Centre Wellington access points at Elora and Fergus. Wellington County rural concession roads link Fergus and Elora for road riding, and the Grand River corridor between the two towns runs short county roads with light traffic. The trailway extends well beyond the township into Erin and Caledon, but the western terminus and the busiest access points sit inside Centre Wellington.

The Elora Gorge tube run threads the Grand River through a 22-metre limestone canyon — a Class II tubing and whitewater section managed by the Grand River Conservation Authority at Elora Gorge Conservation Area, which rents tubes through the summer when flows allow. The tube run closes on short notice during high-water releases or unsafe flows, and the gorge walls themselves are within the conservation area boundary. Whitewater kayakers run the same section at higher water; flatwater paddling resumes downstream of the gorge mouth toward West Montrose.

The Elora Quarry Conservation Area is a former limestone quarry — now a 2-acre swimming hole below the gorge with a small beach area, lifeguarded swim zone, and reservation-required entry through peak summer. Cliff jumping is prohibited. Belwood Lake Conservation Area, on the reservoir above Shand Dam, has a sandy reservoir beach with calmer water than the gorge-side swim. Both are GRCA-operated.

The Grand River tailwater between Shand Dam and West Montrose is one of the better-known tailwater brown trout fisheries in southern Ontario, supported by the dam's cold-water releases out of Belwood Lake — Friends of the Grand River stewards the fishery alongside the Ministry of Natural Resources under Fisheries Management Zone 16 rules. A spawning sanctuary closes a section below Shand Dam from October through late April. Belwood Lake itself fishes for walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, perch, and pike, and the Irvine River through Elora is small-stream brown trout water.

The Wellington County Museum and Archives, between Fergus and Elora in the 1877 House of Industry, is a National Historic Site of Canada and the county's central heritage institution. Downtown Fergus and downtown Elora are two intact 19th-century limestone mill-town streetscapes on the Grand and Irvine rivers — the Fergus dam in the heart of town, Elora's gorge-edge mill core a short drive west. The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games has run annually since 1946 on the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex grounds, drawing pipe bands, heavy events, and dancing.
