Freshwater Fishing.

The Grand River tailwater between Shand Dam and West Montrose carries cold-water releases out of Belwood Lake — the engineering legacy of the 1942 Shand Dam. Friends of the Grand River stewards the brown trout fishery alongside Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources, and FMZ 16 governs licensing, season, and the spawning sanctuary downstream of the dam.

Belwood Lake itself sits behind the dam.

Freshwater Fishing in Centre Wellington
01 — What to know

The brief.

This is the better-known tailwater brown trout fishery in southern Ontario — fly fishing dominates, with smallmouth bass also strong through the warmer months. The Shand Dam sanctuary closes a section below the dam from October 1 to the last Saturday in April to protect the brown trout spawn.

Belwood Lake fishes for walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, perch, and pike — the GRCA reservoir runs typical seasonal water-level fluctuations as the dam releases for downstream low-flow augmentation. The Irvine River through Elora is a small-stream brown trout tributary inside the gorge.

All fishing in Centre Wellington falls under Fisheries Management Zone 16 — Lake Erie watershed; check the MNR summary for current dates and limits.
