Amherstburg.
At the mouth of the Detroit River where it meets the western basin of Lake Erie, Amherstburg packs an unusual density of national heritage sites and migration habitat into a small Essex County town across from Detroit. Fort Malden National Historic Site preserves the British stronghold from the War of 1812 — site of the August 1812 Brock–Tecumseh meeting that led to the Siege of Detroit.
The Amherstburg Freedom Museum, with the 1848 Nazrey African Methodist Episcopal Church, interprets the Underground Railroad terminus on the Canadian side. Holiday Beach Conservation Area, a globally significant Important Bird Area on Lake Erie, funnels between 600,000 and 750,000 migrant birds and an average of 75,000 hawks each fall, counted from a 12-metre tower run by the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory.
The Detroit River itself is the only river with both Canadian and American Heritage River designations, runs through the only International Wildlife Refuge in North America, and hosts a spring walleye run that draws as many as 10 million fish from Lake Erie. A short drive south of downtown Windsor; a few hours from Toronto via the major highway corridor.

Walking & Strolling
Amherstburg's downtown waterfront stitches together a heritage walking core on the Detroit River. King's Navy Yard Park sits on the late-18th-century British shipyard footprint with paved paths along the river; Fort Malden's earthworks at 100 Laird Avenue give a direct line of sight across the channel to Bois Blanc Island and its 1836 limestone lighthouse. Flat, paved, walkable in any season the wind off Lake Erie cooperates.

Holiday Beach Conservation Area is the centre of the local nature-interpretation infrastructure: the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory operates banding programs and the Festival of Hawks each fall, with the three-storey hawk tower above the Lake Erie shoreline. Big Creek Conservation Area, the adjoining marsh complex, is "one of the largest wetlands in Essex County" and a designated Important Bird Area. Spring and fall are peak migration windows; species turnover is the draw.

Amherstburg sits at the western anchor of an Essex County rail-trail network. The Cypher Systems Group Greenway runs 23.9 kilometres from Sadler's Park in Essex along a former CN Rail spur (donated 1997) toward Amherstburg; the 42-kilometre Chrysler Canada Greenway connects Oldcastle near Windsor to Leamington; and the signed Great Lakes Waterfront Trail follows the Detroit River and Lake Erie shoreline through Essex County. Flat terrain, granular and paved surfaces, multi-use.

The Detroit River along Amherstburg is a Canadian Heritage River with sheltered urban-paddle character. Common routes include circumnavigations of Bois Blanc (Boblo) Island past the 1836 limestone lighthouse, and Detroit River channel paddles along the Canadian shoreline. Public shore access from Town of Amherstburg waterfront parks. Watch shipping traffic — the Detroit River sits on one of the busier international border crossings in North America.

Two yacht clubs operate on the lower Detroit River at Amherstburg — the Amherstburg Yacht Club and the River Canard Yacht Club — with direct Lake Erie access at the river mouth. Boblo Island Marina sits across the channel. The Detroit River corridor offers sheltered cruising with views of international shipping traffic transiting between Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair.

Holiday Beach Conservation Area has a long sandy Lake Erie beach with washrooms, changerooms, and a boardwalk under the three-storey observation tower — an unusual combination of family beach and birding infrastructure in one site. The beach is open during day-use hours (6 a.m. – 8 p.m., mid-April through Thanksgiving). Lake Erie water temperatures here run warmer than the rest of Canada through summer.

Each spring as many as 10 million walleye leave the deeper waters of Lake Erie and ascend the Detroit River through the Amherstburg Channel and Livingstone Channel to spawn. The Detroit River and Lake Erie are commonly called the "Walleye Capital of the World," and the Canadian Heritage Rivers System describes the Detroit as "one of the best urban fisheries in North America." Smallmouth bass and yellow perch fish well from the Boblo Island shoreline through summer. Fisheries Management Zone 19 — sport limit 6, conservation limit 2 — covers Detroit River and Lake Erie western basin waters.

The same Lake Erie funnel that concentrates fall raptors at Holiday Beach concentrates Monarch butterflies — the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory monitors both alongside songbird migration. Fall colour through the Carolinian forest pockets adds a secondary draw; the headline Monarch concentration in the region is at Point Pelee about an hour east, but Holiday Beach is the local funnel.

Holiday Beach Conservation Area's three-storey Hawk Tower stands directly under one of North America's busiest fall raptor flyways — an average of 75,000 hawks counted each fall as birds funnel along the Lake Erie north shore to cross the Detroit River, plus 600,000 to 750,000 total migrant birds when ducks, songbirds and Monarch butterflies are included. The Holiday Beach Migration Observatory has logged 3,863,077 raptors over 30,395.8 hours of counting since 1974. The Detroit River — part of the only International Wildlife Refuge in North America — also stages overwintering canvasbacks and other waterfowl through the cold months.

Amherstburg sits at the western anchor of the Lake Erie North Shore wine region — widely considered Canada's oldest designated wine route. In-town wineries include Vivace Estate Winery and Dancing Swallows Vineyard; the route runs east along County Road 50 toward Leamington and the Pelee Peninsula. Smaller scale than Niagara or Prince Edward County, but the wine country sits inside the same town as the Detroit River waterfront.

Two national heritage threads meet at the Detroit River. Fort Malden National Historic Site (100 Laird Avenue) preserves the British stronghold from the War of 1812 and the Rebellions of 1837–1838 — site of the August 1812 Brock–Tecumseh meeting that led directly to the Siege of Detroit. The Amherstburg Freedom Museum (277 King Street) interprets the Underground Railroad terminus on the Canadian side, including the 1848 Nazrey African Methodist Episcopal Church. King's Navy Yard Park sits on the footprint of the late-18th-century British naval shipyard, and the 1836 Bois Blanc Island Lighthouse — a limestone "imperial tower" — is visible from the Amherstburg waterfront across the channel.
