Freshwater Fishing.

The Detroit River runs 51 kilometres from Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie, and the Amherstburg / Boblo segment sits at the Lake Erie mouth where the Canadian Heritage Rivers System describes "one of the best urban fisheries in North America." Each spring as many as 10 million walleye ascend through the Amherstburg Channel and Livingstone Channel to spawn — Amherstburg sits at the river mouth where the run concentrates.

Freshwater Fishing in Amherstburg
01 — What to know

The brief.

Amherstburg waters fall under Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 19, which covers Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and the St.

Clair / Detroit / Upper Niagara Rivers. Walleye and sauger are open all year (sport limit 6, conservation limit 2); bass season opens the 4th Saturday in June and runs through November 30 (sport limit 6, conservation limit 2).

Spring is the marquee window for the walleye run; summer carries smallmouth bass off the Boblo Island shoreline and yellow perch into the Lake Erie western basin. The Amherstburg / Boblo segment of the Detroit River is the same FMZ 19 water as the rest of the western basin — one licence, one set of limits, regardless of which side of the channel you fish.
