Heritage & Culture.

Two national heritage threads meet inside one small town. Fort Malden National Historic Site at 100 Laird Avenue commemorates the British stronghold on the Detroit frontier during the War of 1812 and the Rebellions of 1837–1838 — the same Detroit frontier whose Underground Railroad terminus sits a few blocks away at the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, 277 King Street, where the 1848 Nazrey African Methodist Episcopal Church still stands.

01 — What to know

The brief.

Fort Malden NHS opens for the 2026 season on May 16, with Canada Strong Pass admission free June 19 – September 7. Bois Blanc / Boblo Island Lighthouse, the 1836 limestone "imperial tower" at the river mouth, is not open to visitors — the island is private and the structure is viewable only from the Amherstburg shoreline or from the water.

The Amherstburg Freedom Museum at 277 King Street runs in-house tours of the museum and the historic cabin. King's Navy Yard Park sits on the footprint of the late-18th-century British naval shipyard; together with Fort Malden's earthworks across the Detroit River from Bois Blanc, the four sites cluster within a walkable downtown core.
