01 — Abstract

South Dundas runs along the north shore of the upper St. Lawrence Seaway between Cornwall and Brockville, gathering the villages of Morrisburg, Iroquois, and Williamsburg under one rural municipality on the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.

The St. Lawrence Parks Commission anchors the riverfront with Upper Canada Village (the 1860s living-history museum at Crysler Park, with more than 40 heritage buildings relocated from the Lost Villages flooded by the 1958 Seaway construction), Crysler Park Marina, and the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary — a federal sanctuary established in 1961 along the Seaway shoreline near Morrisburg and Ingleside.

Crysler's Farm National Historic Site, on the same continuous riverfront, marks the 11 November 1813 War of 1812 battlefield. The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail threads Highway 2 and the Seaway shoreline through both Morrisburg and Iroquois, where the Iroquois Lock controls Canadian-side water levels on the upper Seaway.

South Dundas sits on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe Nations.

Walking & Strolling

The Upper Canada Village grounds carry a walkable 1860s village footprint with more than 40 heritage buildings spread across pathways at Crysler Park near Morrisburg. Crysler's Farm Battlefield Memorial Park, on the same continuous riverfront, runs an interpretive walk past the obelisk and battlefield markers. East along Highway 2, Morrisburg's waterfront and Morrisburg Beach face the upper Seaway, and a short distance further the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary opens its trail network and observation tower on the shoreline.

Nature & Discovery

The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary, a federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary established in 1961 on the Seaway shoreline near Morrisburg and Ingleside, is a major fall staging area for Canada geese and ducks. The St. Lawrence Parks Commission operates a Nature Centre, an observation tower, and roughly 8 km of walking and birdwatching trails on Parks Commission land within the federal sanctuary boundary. South Nation Conservation manages an inland trail network at Warwick Forest and Two Creeks Conservation Area in the South Nation River watershed.

Cycling

The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail threads South Dundas along Highway 2 and the St. Lawrence Seaway shoreline, with documented community segments through both Morrisburg and Iroquois on a mix of paved off-road and on-road riding. Cornwall and Counties Tourism maintains an SDG-wide cycling inventory across Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry, with the Waterfront Trail as the spine. From Morrisburg the corridor runs east toward South Stormont and the Long Sault Parkway, and west toward Iroquois and Edwardsburgh-Cardinal — a continuous Seaway shoreline ride.

Sailing & Boating

Crysler Park Marina, run by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission near Upper Canada Village, is a full-service marina on the upper St. Lawrence Seaway shoreline with transient slips, fuel, and a boat launch. From Crysler Park, pleasure craft run the upper Seaway pools and can transit the Iroquois Lock at the village of Iroquois — the regulating lock on the Canadian side of the upper Seaway — to reach upstream waters. The Seaway navigation-season schedule and pleasure-craft transit fees are published by The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.

Wildlife Viewing

The Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary on the St. Lawrence Seaway shoreline near Morrisburg and Ingleside is a documented major fall staging area for Canada geese and ducks, with raptor traffic — eagles and hawks — passing the same shoreline corridor on migration. The federal sanctuary designation (Environment and Climate Change Canada, 1961) prohibits hunting within the boundary and restricts visitor activity to designated trails and the Nature Centre, which gives the staging concentrations a stable viewing base from the observation tower.

Heritage & Culture

Upper Canada Village, the 1860s living-history museum at Crysler Park near Morrisburg, holds more than 40 heritage buildings relocated from the communities flooded by the 1958 St. Lawrence Seaway construction — a continuous in-place record of Upper Canadian village life paired with the relocation story itself. On the adjacent grounds, Crysler's Farm Battlefield Memorial Park commemorates the 11 November 1813 War of 1812 battle, designated a National Historic Site by Parks Canada. The Lost Villages Historical Society documents the ten communities — Aultsville, Farran's Point, and Dickinson's Landing among them — that originated in present-day South Dundas before the Seaway. The Iroquois Lock at the village of Iroquois carries the same 1958 Seaway-construction story forward as a working regulating lock on the Canadian side of the upper Seaway.
