Port Colborne.
Port Colborne is the Lake Erie end of the Welland Canal — a small Niagara city built around the canal mouth, where freighters transit Lock 8 (the longest lock on the Welland Canal / St. Lawrence Seaway system) on their way between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
The City's lakefront strings HH Knoll Lakeview Park, the canal-mouth piers, the Sugarloaf Marina basin (widely described as one of the largest freshwater marinas on the Great Lakes), and Nickel Beach — a Lake Erie sand beach east of the canal — together along a flat shoreline. Port Colborne is the Lake Erie terminus of the Welland Canals Parkway Trail and the southern anchor of the roughly 140-kilometre Greater Niagara Circle Route.
The Port Colborne Historical & Marine Museum and the annual Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival on the Civic Holiday weekend run the canal-heritage programming. Roughly an hour from Hamilton and an hour and a half from the GTA via the QEW and the Niagara highway grid.

Walking & Strolling
HH Knoll Lakeview Park, the canal-mouth piers, and the West Street downtown corridor along the canal form a flat, easy walking ribbon at the south end of the Welland Canal. The Welland Canals Parkway Trail path heads north out of the city along the canal corridor on the same paved surface used by cyclists. On warm days you can walk the piers, watch a freighter clear Lock 8, and continue north toward the Welland boundary on the same path.

Port Colborne is the Lake Erie terminus of the Welland Canals Parkway Trail — a paved multi-use canal-corridor trail and segment of the Trans Canada Trail — and the southern anchor of the Greater Niagara Circle Route, the roughly 140-kilometre canal-corridor cycling loop that links the Lake Erie end of the Welland Canal to the Lake Ontario end at Port Weller in St. Catharines. From the canal-mouth piers and HH Knoll Lakeview Park, the trail heads north along the canal toward Welland, Thorold (where the active canal climbs the Niagara Escarpment through the flight locks), and onward to Niagara-on-the-Lake or Port Weller. The riding is flat, paved, and signed.

Sugarloaf Marina at the canal mouth on Lake Erie is widely described as one of the largest freshwater marinas on the Great Lakes — City-owned, with seasonal slips, transient docking, and direct Lake Erie access. From Sugarloaf, sailors and motor cruisers run out into the eastern basin of Lake Erie or up the Welland Canal through Lock 8 — the longest lock on the canal — into the Seaway system. Lock 8 itself is publicly visible from HH Knoll Lakeview Park as freighters transit between Lake Erie and the canal.

Nickel Beach is the City-operated Lake Erie sand beach east of the canal mouth — seasonal day-use fees, parking, and seasonal lifeguards. HH Knoll Lakeview Park has additional lake-shore access (rockier than Nickel Beach), and Mariner's Park west of the canal mouth adds a smaller lakefront. For the longer Lake Erie sand beach product, Long Beach Conservation Area is in Wainfleet (NPCA) and Crystal Beach is in Fort Erie — both adjacent municipalities.

The eastern basin of Lake Erie off Port Colborne is one of Ontario's most productive walleye, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch fisheries (FMZ 16), accessed by charter and private boat from Sugarloaf Marina and the canal-mouth ramps. Lake trout enter the boat-charter mix in deeper eastern basin water. The Welland Canal in the city is FMZ 19 and holds warmwater bass, pike, and panfish. An Ontario fishing licence is required and FMZ 16 / FMZ 19 seasons and limits apply.

Port Colborne's heritage product is the canal mouth — Lock 8, the longest lock on the Welland Canal / St. Lawrence Seaway system, sits at the south end of the city, and freighter transits are visible from HH Knoll Lakeview Park and the canal-mouth piers. The Port Colborne Historical & Marine Museum, City-operated, anchors the indoor canal-history programming, and the annual Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival on the Civic Holiday weekend turns the downtown West Street corridor and the canal piers into a multi-day waterfront festival. For the active flight locks (4-5-6) and the Lock 7 viewing complex, head north up the canal to Thorold; that product is in the next municipality.
