Sailing & Boating.
Sugarloaf Marina at the canal mouth on Lake Erie is widely described as one of the largest freshwater marinas on the Great Lakes — City-owned, with seasonal slips, transient docking, and direct Lake Erie access. From Sugarloaf, sailors and motor cruisers run out into the eastern basin of Lake Erie or up the Welland Canal through Lock 8, the longest lock on the Welland Canal, into the Seaway system.
The brief.
Sugarloaf Marina sits in Sugarloaf Harbour just west of the canal mouth and is the main launch point in the city; transient docking is available for visiting boats, and the marina is the home base for charter and recreational cruising on Lake Erie's eastern basin. Lock 8 transit is open to pleasure craft locking through the Seaway on the Welland Canal — Seaway transit is operated by the St.
Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation on a published schedule and small-craft transits require radio contact and lock fees. Lock 8 is publicly visible from HH Knoll Lakeview Park and the canal-mouth piers, where you can watch freighters clear the chamber.
The Lake Erie sailing season runs May through October.
