01 — Abstract

The Town of Parry Sound sits on the northeast shore of Georgian Bay at the mouth of the Seguin River, fronting the deep natural harbour known as Big Sound — the launch and resupply point for the 30,000 Islands archipelago that runs offshore along the eastern Georgian Bay UNESCO Biosphere coast. The Charles W.

Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts opened on the waterfront in 2003 and houses the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame, dedicated to Parry Sound–born Bobby Orr; the Trestle Walk passes beneath the Canadian Pacific Railway trestle bridge across the Seguin River downtown. Tower Hill carries a restored 1920s steel fire-tower lookout above the sound, and the Rotary Algonquin Regiment Fitness Trail laces the in-town parks network.

Parry Sound is the western trailhead of the Seguin Trail / Park to Park Trail corridor toward Algonquin Provincial Park, and a stop on VIA Rail's transcontinental Canadian. A few hours north of the GTA on Highway 400.

Walking & Strolling

The Trestle Walk runs along the Seguin River beneath the Canadian Pacific Railway trestle bridge in the heart of downtown — a short pedestrian path that frames the river crossing the railway has used since the late 19th century. From the Town Dock waterfront promenade in front of the Charles W. Stockey Centre, the walk continues to Salt Dock Park on Big Sound. Tower Hill carries a restored 1920s steel fire-tower lookout above the sound, with stair access from the in-town parks network and views over the harbour and the offshore islands.

Cycling

Parry Sound is the western trailhead of the Seguin Trail / Park to Park Trail corridor, a long-distance multi-use rail trail running east toward Algonquin Provincial Park as part of the Trans Canada Trail. Inside the town, the paved Rotary Algonquin Regiment Fitness Trail loops through the in-town parks network — a short urban-cycling counterpoint to the long-distance corridor leaving from the same trailhead. The downtown grid connects directly to the Town Dock and Salt Dock Park along Big Sound.

Paddling — Sea & Coastal

Big Sound is a sheltered deep-water harbour with public launches off Town Dock and Salt Dock Park, opening directly to the 30,000 Islands archipelago of the eastern Georgian Bay UNESCO Biosphere. From the Town Dock the inner harbour stays protected enough for a calm-day sea-kayak start; once paddlers are past the harbour mouth, the open Georgian Bay water and offshore archipelago wind and weather take over. The Town is the launch and resupply anchor for paddlers heading into the 30,000 Islands rather than the route's centre — the islands themselves sit in adjacent townships along the eastern shore.

Sailing & Boating

The Town Dock and Big Sound Marina anchor downtown Parry Sound's harbour with transient and seasonal slip product on the deep natural harbour at the mouth of the Seguin River. From Big Sound, sailors and motor-boaters run out into the open Georgian Bay water and the 30,000 Islands offshore — among the more storied small-craft cruising grounds on the Great Lakes. The harbour sits in front of the Stockey Centre and the downtown grid; Wasauksing First Nation's Parry Island lies directly offshore, connected to the mainland by the Wasauksing Swing Bridge.

Heritage & Culture

The Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts opened on the Parry Sound waterfront in 2003 and houses the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame, dedicated to the Parry Sound–born NHL defenceman. The Festival of the Sound concert series runs at the Stockey Centre through the summer. Downtown, the Canadian Pacific Railway trestle bridge across the Seguin River is the in-town landmark — the Trestle Walk pedestrian path passes directly beneath it. Parry Sound is also a stop on VIA Rail's transcontinental Canadian service from Toronto to Vancouver.
