Paddling — Sea & Coastal.
Big Sound is the deep natural harbour at the mouth of the Seguin River — sheltered enough for a calm-day sea-kayak start from the Town Dock, opening directly through the harbour mouth to the 30,000 Islands archipelago of the eastern Georgian Bay UNESCO Biosphere coast. From Salt Dock Park on the western waterfront, paddlers can launch into the same inner harbour without crossing the downtown road network.
The brief.
The Town's launches are at the Town Dock (downtown, in front of the Stockey Centre) and Salt Dock Park (western waterfront). Both open into Big Sound, the sheltered inner harbour at the mouth of the Seguin River.
Once paddlers are past the harbour mouth, the open Georgian Bay water and offshore archipelago wind, weather, and shipping lanes take over — the Town serves as the launch and resupply anchor for paddlers heading into the 30,000 Islands rather than the route's centre. The 30,000 Islands themselves sit in adjacent townships along the eastern Georgian Bay shore; the Georgian Bay Biosphere is the regional stewardship body.
Late May through September is the comfortable window; July and August carry the most boat traffic.
