Haldimand County is a single-tier rural municipality on Lake Erie's north shore, anchored by Cayuga (the county seat), Caledonia, Dunnville, Hagersville, and Jarvis. The lower Grand River runs diagonally through the county from Caledonia south through Cayuga to Dunnville and out to Lake Erie at Port Maitland — a flat, paddleable corridor that opens onto roughly 87 km of Lake Erie shoreline.

Selkirk Provincial Park's flat trail network includes Wheeler's Walk, a wooden boardwalk across a Lake Erie marsh; Rock Point Provincial Park threads short loops through dune-and-bluff Carolinian habitat above the lake.
