Whitewater Region.
Whitewater Region is a rural Renfrew County township anchored by the village of Cobden on Muskrat Lake and the hamlets of Beachburg and Foresters Falls, fronting a long stretch of the Ottawa River across from Quebec. Between Foresters Falls and Westmeath, the river splits around named islands and drops through the Rocher Fendu / McCoy's Chute whitewater stretch — a Class III–IV run that carries named rapids including Garvin's, Lorne (Bus Eater), McCoy's Chute, the Sevens, Iron Ring, and Coliseum.
Commercial whitewater rafting on this stretch has run since the early 1970s and the Sevens play wave has drawn freestyle kayakers from across North America for decades. Inland, Muskrat Lake at Cobden anchors village waterfront — the lake is associated with Champlain's 1613 voyage up the Ottawa Valley and the Champlain Trail Museum and Pioneer Village in Cobden interprets that heritage layer.
The Algonquin Trail / Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail (former CPR rail line) passes through the township for cyclists and snowmobilers, and the non-operating Westmeath Provincial Park supplies a sand-beach and dune day-use stretch on the Ottawa River. Cobden and Beachburg sit about 90 minutes from downtown Ottawa via the Trans-Canada Highway corridor.

Cycling
The Algonquin Trail / Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail — the former CPR rail line through the Ottawa Valley — passes through Whitewater Region as a flat gravel multi-use rail trail, providing the township's primary cycling spine for gravel and rail-trail riding through Cobden, Beachburg, and out across rural Renfrew County. The Trans-Canada Highway 17 corridor is the main road route through the township but is a busy truck route and not preferred for road cycling; the rural concession roads off Highway 17 carry quieter quiet rolling Ottawa Valley terrain. Trail surface and segment status vary by season — ATV and snowmobile use is also permitted on segments of the Algonquin Trail.

Muskrat Lake at Cobden is the obvious flatwater anchor — a long, sheltered lake in a fault-bounded basin with village waterfront and a public launch, suited to canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard. Inland, Olmstead Lake supplies a quieter cottage-lake option. On the Ottawa River, the calm side channels behind the named islands (Bellowes Bay and the back-channels above and below the Rocher Fendu whitewater stretch) carry flatwater paddling away from the rafting and freestyle traffic. The whitewater section of the river itself is not a flatwater run — paddlers there should be prepared for Class III–IV water and named portages.

The Ottawa River between Foresters Falls and Westmeath — the Rocher Fendu / McCoy's Chute stretch — is the township's defining draw and one of the longest-running commercial whitewater rafting destinations in North America, paddled since the early 1970s. The river splits around named islands and drops through a long sequence of Class III–IV rapids: Garvin's, Lorne (Bus Eater), McCoy's Chute, the Sevens, Iron Ring, Push Button, Coliseum, Phil's Hole, Black Velvet, and Butcher Knife. The Sevens is a long-recognized big-volume play wave that draws freestyle kayakers from across North America. Commercial rafting trips run from Beachburg and Foresters Falls; spring runoff carries significantly bigger water than mid-summer flows.

Muskrat Lake at Cobden carries small-craft sailing and motor-boating off the village waterfront, with a public boat launch and the long, narrow lake basin opening for cruising. The Ottawa River through the township is broad and navigable for cruising motor-boating in the calm sections above and below the Rocher Fendu whitewater — boaters should hold well off the rafting stretch between Foresters Falls and Westmeath. The Quebec-side bank of the river is across the channel and out of the township.

Cobden Beach on Muskrat Lake is the village beach in Cobden, with sand frontage and a shallow swim area. Westmeath Provincial Park, a non-operating provincial park on the Ottawa River within / adjacent to the township, protects a sand-beach and dune system that supports day-use river swimming. Both are lifeguard-free and seasonal; swimmers on the Ottawa River should stay well out of the Rocher Fendu / McCoy's Chute whitewater section between Foresters Falls and Westmeath.

The Ottawa River through the township carries walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, channel catfish, and lake sturgeon (catch-and-release only); Muskrat Lake at Cobden carries walleye, pike, and panfish. All township waters fall under Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 12 — the Ottawa River regulatory zone — which sets the season structure and limits. FMZ 12 sits within Ontario's bait-management system; consult the regs summary for stretch-specific exceptions and lake sturgeon catch-and-release rules. Ontario fishing licences are required across all waters.

The Champlain Trail Museum and Pioneer Village in Cobden anchors the township's documented heritage layer — Champlain-era Ottawa Valley exploration, pioneer settlement, and local lumber-trade history through restored period buildings. Muskrat Lake itself is part of the Champlain story: the lake is associated with Samuel de Champlain's 1613 voyage up the Ottawa Valley and the lost astrolabe (now held by the Canadian Museum of History). The Beachburg Fair, held in late August at the Beachburg Fairgrounds, is a long-running rural agricultural fair and the township's annual community gathering.
