Muskoka Lakes.
The Township of Muskoka Lakes covers most of the western and central shoreline of the "Big Three" — Lake Muskoka (120 km², primarily within the township), Lake Rosseau (6,390 ha, 151 km of shoreline), and Lake Joseph (5,460 ha, max depth 93 m) — linked into a single navigable system by the 1871 Port Carling locks on the Indian River and the Port Sandfield channel between Rosseau and Joseph. The village hubs sit on the water: Port Carling at the locks, Bala at the head of the Moon River where Lake Muskoka drains toward Georgian Bay, plus Windermere, Minett, and Rosseau on the upper lakes.
Inland, the 1,906-hectare Torrance Barrens Conservation Reserve was designated Canada's first permanent dark-sky preserve in 1999, and the 808-hectare Hardy Lake Provincial Park holds Atlantic coastal plain plants rare in Ontario. Five named township beaches — Hanna Park (Port Carling), Walker's Point Beach, Valley Green Beach (Milford Bay), Windermere Park, and Port Sandfield Park — open onto the same shield-water shoreline.
Highway 169 / Muskoka Road 118 thread through the township; the GTA sits roughly two hours south. This is the cottage-country heart on the Big Three; Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, and Lake of Bays are separate municipalities to the east.

Hiking
Nine named municipal and provincial trails across rolling Canadian Shield terrain. Hardy Lake Provincial Park at 2346 Muskoka Rd 169 in Torrance carries 3 km and 8 km loops on Township-maintained tread inside an 808-hectare non-operating park. Torrance Barrens has 3 km, 5 km, and 6 km loops off Southwood Road. The 2.5 km Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail at 1057 Milford Bay Rd is the iconic sunset lookout over Lake Muskoka, on a 120-acre Township park. Hazelwood (2.5 km, Port Carling), Walker's Point Lookout (1 km), Walker's Point Trail (1 km), Skeleton Lake Fish Hatchery (1 km, easy, with washrooms), Raymond (2/4 km), and Weir Lake (3.6 km, Bent River) round out the network.

Quieter-bay flatwater on the Big Three plus carry-in alternatives are the practical paddle. The Big Three are working motor-boat waters — paddle from sheltered bays and the township beach parks rather than open-lake centre. Hardy Lake (carry-in only inside the provincial park, no designated boat launch) and Skeleton Lake at 1167 Skeleton Lake Rd 5 give cleaner shield-paddle conditions. The Moon River — the outflow from Lake Muskoka at Bala Falls running to Georgian Bay through the Moon River and Lower Moon River conservation reserves — carries genuine whitewater near Bala Falls and Moon Falls and supports a classic Ontario canoe route with Crown-land camping along the way.

The Moon River drains Lake Muskoka over Bala Falls and carries genuine whitewater between named falls and rapids on its run to Georgian Bay through the Moon River and Lower Moon River conservation reserves — a recognised provincial whitewater route. Strong rather than Signature: it is a single river, not a network of whitewater destinations.

The headline experience is the navigable Big Three system. Lake Muskoka (120 km²), Lake Rosseau (6,390 ha, 151 km of shoreline), and Lake Joseph (5,460 ha, max depth 93 m) link through the 1871 Port Carling locks on the Indian River and the Port Sandfield channel between Rosseau and Joseph, all operated by the District Municipality of Muskoka. Few Ontario townships combine three large interconnected lakes with a 150-year-old purpose-built navigation lock as the defining municipal anchor — this is what Muskoka Lakes is. The locks open seasonally for through-traffic; the swing bridge runs year-round.

Five named township beaches across distinct village hubs put visitors on shield-water shoreline that is the canonical Ontario lake-swim experience: Hanna Park at 40 Bailey St in Port Carling (with playground and covered pavilion), Walker's Point Beach at 1010 Nixon Rd, Valley Green Beach at 2605 Muskoka Rd 118 in Milford Bay, Windermere Park at 2510 Windermere Rd, and Port Sandfield Park at 1306 Peninsula Rd. Skeleton Lake Park at 1167 Skeleton Lake Rd 5 in Ullswater opens onto a quieter interior shield lake. Beach density across this single township — six communities, six lakes — is unusually high for Ontario.

Lake Joseph anchors the cold-water story with an estimated 36,000 lake trout over 30 cm in the 2003–2009 MNRF survey, plus lake whitefish, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, and largemouth bass at 5,460 ha and 93 m max depth. Lake Rosseau (6,390 ha) adds lake whitefish, cisco, walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and muskellunge. Lake Muskoka (120 km²) carries bass, lake trout, walleye, northern pike, and muskellunge. Skeleton Lake (Ullswater) is a deep cold-water lake supporting lake trout. All waters fall under FMZ 15 within the Central Bait Management Zone — live or dead baitfish and leeches cannot be transported into or out of a BMZ. Many lakes carry waterbody-specific overrides; check before fishing.

The Muskoka Lakes Snow Trails Association is the local snowmobile club within OFSC District 7 (North Simcoe & Muskoka), which manages roughly 1,800 km of regional trail network. Two municipal indoor rinks — Bala Sports Centre at 1009 Maple Ave and Port Carling Arena at 3 Bailey St — run through the season; Hanna Park in Port Carling holds a seasonal outdoor rink. Township-maintained hiking trails at Huckleberry Rock Lookout, Hazelwood, Skeleton Lake Fish Hatchery, and Walker's Point Lookout double as snowshoe routes once cover sets. Cold-air shield position holds the season together past most southerly cottage country.

Torrance Barrens Conservation Reserve is the after-dark anchor — 1,906 hectares of low Precambrian-bedrock ridges established in June 1997 and designated Canada's first permanent dark-sky preserve in 1999. The reserve straddles Muskoka Lakes and Gravenhurst; access is from Southwood Road in Torrance, with six free first-come first-served backcountry campsites. Open low-bedrock topography and the absence of nearby urban light pollution combine for sky quality unusual in southern Ontario; Ontario Parks asks visitors to minimize light at night to preserve the designation.

Bala is the Ontario cranberry anchor. Johnston's Cranberry Marsh / Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery — Ontario's oldest cranberry farm — runs 27 acres of cranberry bog within a 350-acre farm with a 300,000–500,000 lb annual harvest, plus an on-site farm winery and the "Bog to Bottle" tour. The Bala Cranberry Festival has run as a three-day harvest weekend event since 1984, on the weekend after Canadian Thanksgiving in mid-October (October 16–18 in 2026). It is the only "Cranberry Capital" framing in the province; Ontario's headline winery clusters sit elsewhere (Niagara, PEC, Beamsville).
