Freshwater Fishing.
Lake Joseph holds the cold-water headline at 5,460 hectares and 93 m maximum depth, with an estimated 36,000 lake trout over 30 cm in the 2003–2009 MNRF survey, plus lake whitefish, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, and largemouth bass. Lake Rosseau (6,390 ha) and Lake Muskoka (120 km²) layer multi-species depth across the Big Three system, and Skeleton Lake (Ullswater) carries cold-water lake trout on the interior shield.
The brief.
All township waters fall under FMZ 15 inside the Central Bait Management Zone. Walleye/sauger combined runs January 1 – March 15 plus the third Saturday in May to December 31 (S-4 / C-2; max 1 over 46 cm); lake trout opens January 1 – September 30 (S-2 / C-1); brook trout January 1 – September 30 (S-5 / C-2); bass (largemouth + smallmouth combined) the fourth Saturday in June to November 30 (S-6 / C-2); muskellunge the first Saturday in June to December 15 (S-1, must exceed 91 cm).
FMZ 15 sits within the Central BMZ — live or dead baitfish and leeches cannot be transported into or out of the BMZ. Many lakes carry waterbody-specific overrides; check the FMZ 15 page before fishing each lake.
Lake Joseph's 93 m depth keeps thermoclines cold well into July, supporting the lake-trout fishery.
