The Rockhound Gemboree, organized by the Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce since 1963, is Canada's largest gem and mineral show — 100+ international dealers across four days at the North Hastings Community Centre (103 Newkirk Blvd) and the Bancroft Curling Club (63 Newkirk Blvd) every late July through early August. Year-round, the Bancroft Mineral Museum keeps the rocks-and-minerals story open across the off-season.
The brief.
The Gemboree runs four days at two adjacent indoor venues a short walk apart and offers dealer exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, and the Chamber-organized geologist-led field-trip program (the easiest way for non-locals to access guided collecting). Attendance peaks during the Saturday programming.
The Bancroft Mineral Museum carries an interpretive collection of regional rocks, minerals, and fossils for the rest of the year. Bancroft-area marble was used in the construction of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa and the Ontario Legislative Building in Toronto — a fact you'll see referenced across the Town's interpretive signage and mineral-collecting materials.
The Town of Bancroft and Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini Algonquin First Nation are co-developing the Wàwàtesì ("firefly") cultural-tourism project on the downtown Hastings Heritage Trail and the Migizi Wazoson Eagle's Nest project, which over time will surface more Algonquin cultural programming in the downtown waterfront cluster.
