Bancroft.
Bancroft sits on the York River where Highways 28 and 62 cross at the southern edge of the Canadian Shield, the regional service hub for North Hastings and self-styled Mineral Capital of Canada. Eagle's Nest Park rises directly above downtown off Hastings Street North, the Town-owned lookout where five named trails — Lookout, Hawkwatch Accessible, Granite, Gerry Whyte Plant Identification, and Christy — open onto panoramic views of the York River Valley.
The 156-kilometre Hastings Heritage Trail, the abandoned Central Ontario Railway corridor managed by the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance, runs straight through downtown — past the Municipal Office and the CN Rock Pile, the in-town free-collecting site that anchors Bancroft's rockhounding identity. East along Highway 28, Egan Chutes Provincial Park (in Hastings Highlands, not within the town boundary) marks the start of the multi-day York River paddle to Conroy Marsh.
The Rockhound Gemboree — Canada's largest gem and mineral show, annual since 1963 — concentrates the year's flagship weekend into late July and early August.

The York River Water Trail from Egan Chutes Provincial Park (about 10 km east of downtown on Highway 28) to Conroy Marsh and the public take-out at Combermere is a documented two-day flatwater paddle through the Madawaska Highlands and the A. J. Casson–painted Conroy Marsh wetland. The first three kilometres include three obligatory portages — Egan Chute, Middle Chute, and Farm Chute, 200 to 300 metres each, none runnable in a canoe. The flatwater reach above the chutes through downtown Bancroft is the in-town paddling option.

The York River through and around Bancroft holds smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and the rock bass that produced the Ontario record. Bancroft sits in Fisheries Management Zone 15, with a fish sanctuary on the lower York River from the Hamlet of Radcliffe / Mayhews Landing downstream to the Madawaska confluence at Negeek Lake. The surrounding North Hastings lake chain — Baptiste, Paudash, Elephant, Weslemkoon, Limerick — extends the fishery, with Baptiste Lake (15 minutes west in Herschel Township) the standout for trophy smallmouth.

Bancroft is one of the busier OFSC snowmobile hubs in central Ontario. The 156-kilometre Hastings Heritage Trail carries snowmobile traffic in winter, and the 450-kilometre Central Ontario Loop Trail circles five counties — Hastings, Haliburton, City of Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough, and Northumberland — with Bancroft on the corridor. The Maple Leaf Snow Skimmers, the local OFSC member club, groom the Bancroft district trails. OFSC permits are required and are not sold at the Town office.
