Freshwater Fishing.
The York River through and around Bancroft holds smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and the rock bass that produced Ontario's record. Outside town, the surrounding North Hastings lake chain — Baptiste, Paudash, Elephant, Weslemkoon, Limerick — extends the fishery into deeper cold-water lakes that produce trophy-class smallmouth bass season after season; Baptiste Lake (15 minutes west, in Herschel Township) is the standout among them.
The brief.
Bancroft sits in Fisheries Management Zone 15 (Central Bait Management Zone), with bass season running 4th Saturday of June through November 30 (S-6 / C-2), walleye January 1 to March 15 plus 3rd Saturday of May through December 31 (S-4 / C-2 with one over 46 cm), and lake trout January 1 to September 30 (S-2 / C-1). The York River carries a fish sanctuary: the lower river is closed to fishing from the Hamlet of Radcliffe / Mayhews Landing downstream to a line between points of land at the confluence with Negeek Lake on the Madawaska River.
Live or dead baitfish and leeches may not be transported into or out of FMZ 15. Many lakes carry waterbody-specific overrides — check before fishing.
The deep-water lakes in the surrounding chain (Baptiste at ~2,226 ha, Paudash, Elephant, Weslemkoon, Limerick) are mostly outside Bancroft town boundary in surrounding townships; the in-town surface is the York River.
