Whitby.
Whitby sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Durham Region, between Pickering and Oshawa, with a deep-water harbour at Port Whitby on Whitby Bay and creek-mouth wetlands at Lynde Shores. The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority manages two of the town's outdoor anchors: Lynde Shores Conservation Area (343 hectares of coastal wetland with the chickadee/nuthatch hand-feeding trail and Cranberry Marsh boardwalk) and Heber Down Conservation Area (263 hectares along Lynde Creek with multi-use trails and group camping).
The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail runs the length of the lakeshore through Port Whitby, connecting Heydenshore Park, the town-managed Port Whitby Marina at the foot of Brock Street South, and Cullen Central Park along Lynde Creek. A short drive east of Toronto on the Lakeshore East GO Transit corridor.

Hiking
Heber Down Conservation Area covers 263 hectares of multi-use trail along Lynde Creek north of town, with a loop past the Devil's Den geological feature, while Lynde Shores Conservation Area carries 343 hectares of coastal-wetland trail south at the lake — including the chickadee trail and the Cranberry Marsh boardwalk. The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail threads Lake Ontario between Pickering and Oshawa through Port Whitby, giving a flat lakeshore option that stays open year-round.

The Whitby waterfront ribbon links Heydenshore Park, the Port Whitby Marina at the foot of Brock Street South, and the harbour promenade onto the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail — a flat, paved walking surface along Lake Ontario. North of the lakeshore, Cullen Central Park carries paved walking paths along Lynde Creek near downtown Whitby, and the downtown heritage core sits within easy walking distance of the harbour.

Lynde Shores Conservation Area is one of the most popular birding sites in Durham Region: a 343-hectare coastal wetland with a chickadee/nuthatch hand-feeding trail, the Cranberry Marsh boardwalk, an observation tower, and an eBird hotspot listing. The hand-feeding chickadees at Lynde Shores are the regional anchor — birds will land on a still palm year-round, most readily in winter when they're most habituated. Heber Down adds inland forest birding along Lynde Creek upstream.

The Whitby segment of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail is a signed long-distance corridor along Lake Ontario, threading Heydenshore Park, Port Whitby, and the Lynde Creek mouth and continuing east toward Oshawa and west toward Pickering and Toronto. Heber Down Conservation Area adds an off-road multi-use option on gravel surfaces along Lynde Creek for riders looking for a softer surface a short drive north of the lakeshore.

Port Whitby Marina at the foot of Brock Street South is the Town-managed launch into Whitby Bay — a sheltered northeast-facing inlet that opens onto Lake Ontario. Cranberry Marsh and the lower Lynde Creek mouth at Lynde Shores Conservation Area give a sheltered marsh-paddle alternative for kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddleboard, away from open-lake exposure. Conditions on Whitby Bay are calmest in early morning before the lake breeze fills in.

Port Whitby Marina is a Town of Whitby–managed harbour at the foot of Brock Street South, with transient docking, a public boat launch onto Whitby Bay, and the Whitby Yacht Club operating from the harbour. Whitby Bay opens onto open Lake Ontario for sailing west toward Toronto and Pickering and east toward Oshawa, Cobourg, and Prince Edward County. The harbour's location on the Lakeshore East corridor makes it an accessible Great Lakes sailing port within an hour of downtown Toronto.

Lake Ontario waters off Whitby sit in Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 17, which sets seasons and limits for chinook salmon, rainbow trout / steelhead, lake trout, brown trout, and smallmouth bass. Boat-launch access at Port Whitby opens onto productive open-lake salmonid water, and Lynde Creek carries tributary fishing under the same FMZ 17 framework. A current Ontario Outdoors Card and fishing licence is required, and the FMZ 17 summary on the provincial site is the authoritative season and limit reference.
