Hiking.
Heber Down Conservation Area runs 263 hectares of multi-use trail along Lynde Creek north of Whitby, with a loop past the Devil's Den geological feature and a group camping facility on the same land. South at the lake, Lynde Shores Conservation Area carries 343 hectares of coastal-wetland trail through Cranberry Marsh and the chickadee feeding stations — together the two CLOCA properties bracket the town between creek headwaters and lake mouth.
The brief.
The two CLOCA-managed conservation areas are the easiest hiking inside the town: Heber Down (263 ha, multi-use trails along Lynde Creek, Devil's Den loop) and Lynde Shores (343 ha, chickadee trail, Cranberry Marsh boardwalk, observation tower). Both run year-round; CLOCA may charge a day-use parking fee, and gates are typically locked seasonally so winter access is on-foot only when lots are unplowed.
The Whitby segment of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail adds a flat lakeshore option between Heydenshore Park and Port Whitby. May through October is the easiest window for unbroken trail surfaces; the Waterfront Trail and Lynde Shores lakeshore loop stay walkable into shoulder season and through mild winters.
