Walking & Strolling.
The Welland Recreational Waterway path runs flat and paved alongside the flatwater course through downtown Welland — a walking corridor with regatta and rowing activity to watch, lift-bridge views, and access to Merritt Island and Merritt Park, the riverine parkland between the canal channels in the city centre. The downtown mural collection layers the same walk with public art.
The brief.
The waterway path is the city's flagship walking corridor — paved, flat, and accessible year-round — and the same path is the cycling route, so expect shared use during summer weekends. Merritt Island sits between the canal channels in central Welland and adds parkland walking with views back to the recreational canal.
The Welland Murals, a long-running downtown public-art series, are sited on building façades along the corridor — you can walk the canal and the mural route together. For a quieter, more rural walk, Chippawa Creek Conservation Area on the Welland River corridor west of the city offers short trail loops through NPCA conservation lands.
The downtown waterway path stays walkable through winter on most days; the conservation-area trails depend on snow conditions.
