Heritage & Culture.
Nancy Island Historic Site sits on a small island in the lower Nottawasaga River inside Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, holding the burnt hull of HMS Nancy — a British schooner sunk by an American squadron in August 1814 during the War of 1812 — alongside a museum, theatre, and replica blockhouse. Ontario Parks operates the site within the broader Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, and the Friends of Nancy Island cooperating association supports interpretive programming through the summer season.
The brief.
Nancy Island is the in-park heritage anchor and the only major heritage asset inside the town boundary. The hull of HMS Nancy is the actual burnt schooner, recovered from the river bottom and preserved on display where it was sunk — not a replica.
The museum and theatre carry the War of 1812 interpretation; the replica blockhouse on the grounds anchors the interpretive walk. Site programming is seasonal (typically late June through Labour Day, with shoulder-season weekend openings); the grounds remain accessible to walkers most of the year.
Friends of Nancy Island handles seasonal events and supports the Ontario Parks operations side. The same Wasaga Beach Provincial Park day-use rules and permit access apply at the site's parking.
