Freshwater Fishing.
The Thornbury Fishway, at the mouth of the Beaver River in downtown Thornbury between Mill Street and Bruce Street, is a passive open-channel fish ladder operated by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. From late August through late October, adult Chinook salmon arrive from Georgian Bay to spawn upriver; in April, Rainbow trout move through the same channel — both species visible jumping the steps and pools of the main fishway.
The brief.
The Thornbury Fishway is primarily a viewing facility, not an angling site — angling is regulated and certain reaches are closed. The Beaver and Bighead rivers are managed under Ontario Fisheries Management Zone 16, with sanctuary closures during fall salmon and spring trout spawning.
The Town's indoor fish-cleaning station at 41 Bruce Street North (Thornbury Harbour) serves anglers fishing the harbour and Georgian Bay shoreline. The Bighead River carries steelhead and Chinook on the western edge of the township into Meaford.
An Ontario Outdoors Card and a fishing licence are required for angling; consult FMZ 16 regulations for daily limits, seasons, and sanctuary boundaries.
