Paddling — Flatwater.

Lake Bernard fronts Sundridge from the south — a sizeable Almaguin Highlands warmwater lake that's widely cited as one of the largest lakes in the world without an island. From the municipal access at Lake Bernard Park, paddlers head out onto a single contiguous flatwater body without portage or interior-permit logistics.

Most of the lake's shoreline outside the village footprint sits in Strong Township; the village's defensible claim is the north-shore access and the in-village portion of the lake.

01 — What to know

The brief.

Lake Bernard is a warmwater lake — late May through October is the realistic paddling window, with peak conditions through the summer months. There's no portage system or interior camping; this is day-paddle territory, which makes it different in character from Algonquin Park trips reached out of South River to the north or Killarney to the southwest.

The lake supports canoeing, kayaking, and SUP from the municipal launch; small-craft motorboating shares the water. FMZ 11 fishing rules apply for paddlers who fish along the way, and an Ontario fishing licence is required.

Black-fly and mosquito season runs late May through early July, which most paddlers factor into their first trips of the season. The South River flows out of the lake's north end west toward the Lake Nipissing watershed and carries small-stream paddling on its accessible reaches.
