Swimming & Beach.

Southampton Main Beach runs as a long sand stretch along Lake Huron at the river mouth, fringed by a rare dune-grass shoreline that the town has worked to keep intact. Port Elgin Main Beach pairs sand with a boardwalk, splash pad, and the harbour next door.

Lake Huron's western exposure is the local sunset draw; mid-summer water warms enough for sustained shoreline swimming.

Swimming & Beach in Saugeen Shores
01 — What to know

The brief.

Town of Saugeen Shores beaches are open public space with no day-use fee. Best swimming runs late June through early September; the lake is cold in May and warms slowly.

Watch the dune-grass zones at Southampton — the dune fringe is a town-protected feature, not a sand pad. Port Elgin Main Beach has the most amenities (boardwalk, splash pad, harbour washrooms); Shipley Beach and South Street Beach are quieter alternatives.

Lake Huron's open western shore can produce strong onshore wind and surf on summer afternoons; swim near the boardwalks for safer water.
