Cycling.
The Saugeen Rail Trail is the spine of cycling in Saugeen Shores: 8 km on the former CN line between Port Elgin and Southampton, with a hard-packed stone-dust surface that rolls easily on a hybrid or gravel bike. The trailheads sit at Concession 6 south of Port Elgin and the corner of Grosvenor and Adelaide Streets in Southampton, with multiple intermediate access points along the route.
The brief.
The rail-trail surface is family-friendly and broadly flat — suitable for kids, e-bikes, and casual riders. The popular ride is a 25–30 km loop that combines the Saugeen Rail Trail with the Lake Huron shoreline North Shore Road return; the road section is mostly low-traffic in the shoulder season.
Saugeen Shores is a designated community on the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, which carries paved and on-road waterfront cycling on either side of town. Best season is May through October; the rail-trail is unmaintained for winter use.
