Sailing & Boating.
Two Lake Huron harbours sit four miles apart in Saugeen Shores: Port Elgin Harbour at the south end of town with 268 slips and moorings, and Southampton Harbour at the mouth of the Saugeen River with the Southampton Yacht Club running the sail slips and the Chesley Street Docking Committee running the powerboats. Open Lake Huron is right out the breakwater from either.
The brief.
Port Elgin Harbour is the more developed public marina — fuel (gas and diesel), 30-amp shore power, fresh water, pump-out, accessible washrooms and showers, ice, a launch ramp, and a sand beach next door. Southampton Harbour is the working sailing harbour at the river mouth, with sail slips through the Southampton Yacht Club (who welcome visiting boaters when space permits) and powerboat slips through the Chesley Street Docking Committee.
Both harbours give straight-out access to the open lake; the Southampton entrance also reaches into the lower Saugeen River for sheltered access. Best season is late May through October.
