Heritage & Culture.

Chantry Island Lighthouse stands about a kilometre off Southampton, an 1859 imperial tower set inside a federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary that bars casual landing. The Marine Heritage Society holds the only permit to bring visitors ashore: a short crossing from town, the restored lightkeeper's cottage on the foreshore, and 107 steps up the tower for the offshore view back across the Saugeen River mouth.

01 — What to know

The brief.

The lighthouse and lightkeeper's cottage are accessible only on Marine Heritage Society tours, which run during the summer (typically late May through early September). The Chantry Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary designation under the Migratory Birds Convention Act restricts independent landing — booking through the Marine Heritage Society is the legal way ashore.

On the mainland, the Saugeen Amphitheatre is on Saugeen First Nation #29 land just north of Southampton; July and August programming opens it to visitors for workshops and performances, with the second weekend of August Pow Wow as the season anchor. Plan tour timing around weather: the boat crossing depends on Lake Huron conditions.
