The Penetanguishene Town Dock opens onto sheltered Penetang Bay at the head of Severn Sound, with the inner 30,000 Islands archipelago running north and Midland Bay opening east. Penetanguishene is one of the recognized southern gateways to Georgian Bay's 30,000 Islands cruising grounds — sheltered inshore waters before the open Georgian Bay exposure beyond the harbour mouth.
The brief.
The cruising season runs roughly May through October. From the Town Dock, sailors and motor cruisers run north into the inner 30,000 Islands or east into Midland Bay across the inshore Severn Sound waters.
Beyond the harbour mouth, exposure to open Georgian Bay weather increases — the Penetang Bay shelter ends fairly quickly once you clear the inner shoreline, and marine forecast attention matters for any extended run. The official Georgian Bay Islands National Park visitor anchor is at Honey Harbour to the north (Township of Georgian Bay), not Penetanguishene; private cruising into the southern islands of GBI NP is the Penetanguishene framing.
