01 — Abstract

Penetanguishene sits at the head of Penetang Bay on the south shore of Georgian Bay, between Tiny Township to the north and Midland to the east, sharing the inshore waters of Severn Sound. Discovery Harbour, the reconstructed early-19th-century British Royal Navy base founded in 1817 and expanded as an Army garrison through the 1830s, anchors the waterfront with full-scale schooner replicas of HMS Tecumseth and HMS Bee at the historic dock.

The downtown is officially bilingual, rooted in the 1828 migration of British soldiers, voyageurs, and Métis families from Drummond Island when the post was ceded to the United States. Rotary Champlain Wendat Park at the head of the bay marks Champlain's 1615 arrival in Wendake Ehen — the Wendat homeland.

Awenda Provincial Park's 30+ km of trails and four sand beaches sit immediately north in Tiny Township, and the Tay Shore Trail runs east to Waubaushene on the Trans Canada Trail. About two hours from the GTA via Highway 400 and Highway 93.

  1. 01Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene is a reconstructed early-19th-century British naval and military establishment, originally founded in 1817 as a Royal Navy base on Penetang Bay following the War of 1812 and expanded as a British Army garrison through the 1830s; the site is operated by the Ontario Heritage Trust through Huronia Historical Parks and includes full-scale schooner replicas of HMS Tecumseth and HMS Bee.Source ↗
  2. 02Penetanguishene's Francophone and Métis community traces to the 1828 migration of British soldiers, voyageurs, and Métis families from the British post on Drummond Island to the new garrison at Penetanguishene; this migration established the historic French-speaking community in Huronia and the town remains officially bilingual.Source ↗
  3. 03Awenda Provincial Park, immediately north of Penetanguishene in Tiny Township, is a 2,915-hectare park with more than 30 km of hiking trails, four sand swimming beaches on Georgian Bay, Kettle's Lake, and a 333-site campground; it is the regional outdoor-recreation anchor accessible from Penetanguishene, though formally outside the town boundary.Source ↗
  4. 04Penetang Bay and Midland Bay together form the inner waters of Severn Sound on the south shore of Georgian Bay, a sheltered cruising and paddling ground at the southern gateway to Georgian Bay's 30,000 Islands archipelago.Source ↗
  5. 05Penetanguishene sits on the traditional territory of the Wendat (Huron-Wendat Nation), the Anishinaabe (including the Beausoleil First Nation), and the Métis (Huronia Métis Council, Métis Nation of Ontario); the pre-contact Wendat homeland — Wendake Ehen — encompassed the south Georgian Bay region.Source ↗

Walking & Strolling

The Penetanguishene Town Dock and downtown harbourfront thread the head of Penetang Bay along Main Street, with the Rotary Champlain Wendat Park at the bay's southern point. Discovery Harbour's grounds extend the walk west along Penetang Bay through the reconstructed Royal Navy and Army establishment, where the HMS Tecumseth and HMS Bee schooner replicas sit at the historic dock. The bilingual downtown core carries the French / English heritage from the 1828 Drummond Island migration in its street life and signage.

Cycling

The Tay Shore Trail runs 18.5 km of paved multi-use surface east through Tay Township from the Midland–Tay boundary to Waubaushene, on the Trans Canada Trail and the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail; the regional ride from Penetanguishene picks up the corridor through Midland a short distance east. Inside Penetanguishene the road and waterfront network carries local cycling along the harbourfront and the Discovery Harbour approach. The corridor connects Penetanguishene to the south Georgian Bay paved network running east to Waubaushene.

Paddling — Sea & Coastal

Sheltered sea-kayak and SUP launches start from Penetang Bay at the head of Severn Sound, opening onto the inner 30,000 Islands archipelago — one of the world's largest freshwater archipelagos. From Penetang Bay a multi-day paddler can reach Beausoleil Island and the southern islands of Georgian Bay Islands National Park, though the official Beausoleil access is from Honey Harbour to the north. Inshore Severn Sound stays sheltered from prevailing weather; exposure increases beyond the harbour mouth.

Sailing & Boating

The Penetanguishene Town Dock opens onto sheltered Penetang Bay at the head of Severn Sound, with cruising waters running north through the inner 30,000 Islands archipelago and east into Midland Bay. Penetanguishene is one of the recognized southern gateways to the 30,000 Islands cruising grounds — sheltered inshore waters before exposure to open Georgian Bay opens up beyond the harbour mouth. The municipal harbour carries pleasure-craft traffic across the May-through-October season.
