Hiking.
The North Perth Trail System runs roughly 22 km on former rail rights-of-way from Gowanstown through Listowel and Atwood to Henfryn — the spine of walking inside the municipality, built by a community trails committee that began connecting North Perth's three wards in 1997. Inside Listowel, the Rotary Walkway adds a 2.0 km accessible loop along the Maitland River through Memorial Park, on concrete with stone-dust segments and lighted year-round.
The brief.
The bulk of the named substrate is rail-trail walking on flat former rail beds: the 8.0 km Listowel to Atwood Trail (natural surface and gravel), the Listowel to Gowanstown Trail (gravel), and the 2.0 km Kinsmen Trail back to Memorial Park. The Rotary Walkway is the easiest year-round walk inside Listowel, accessible and lighted, and is also used for cross-country skiing in winter.
The G2G Rail Trail through the village of Monkton extends the same kind of flat rail-trail surface across the southeast corner of the municipality. Trail surfaces are mostly natural and gravel — comfortable for walking and stroller use on the Rotary Walkway, less reliable in spring thaw or after summer rain on the soft-surface segments.
May through October is the easiest window; the in-town Rotary Walkway runs year-round.
