01 — Abstract

North Perth is a rural municipality at the headwaters of the Maitland River in the northern part of Perth County, anchored by the town of Listowel and including Atwood, Monkton, Gowanstown, Trowbridge, and Henfryn. The North Perth Trail System runs roughly 22 km on former rail rights-of-way from Gowanstown through Listowel and Atwood to Henfryn, and a separate corridor — the 132 km Goderich to Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail — passes east-west through the village of Monkton.

Inside Listowel, the Rotary Walkway loops 2 km along the Maitland River through Memorial Park on a fully accessible concrete-and-stone-dust surface, lighted year-round. The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority manages the watershed and regulates the Listowel-area floodplain.

North Perth sits within Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Neutral (Attawandaron) traditional territory, covered by the 1827 Huron Tract Treaty. About an hour northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo on Highway 23 and an hour east of Goderich.

Hiking

The 22 km North Perth Trail System carries the bulk of the walking substrate — the 8.0 km Listowel to Atwood Trail on natural-surface and gravel former rail bed, plus the Listowel to Gowanstown Trail and the 2.0 km Kinsmen Trail through Listowel back to Memorial Park. Inside Listowel, the 2.0 km Rotary Walkway loops along the Maitland River through Memorial Park on accessible concrete-and-stone-dust surface, lighted year-round. The G2G Rail Trail through Monkton adds a long-distance walking corridor on the same kind of flat former rail surface used elsewhere in the municipality.

Walking & Strolling

The Rotary Walkway makes a 2.0 km loop along the Maitland River through Listowel Memorial Park, on concrete with stone-dust segments — fully accessible and lighted, and used in winter for cross-country skiing as well as walking. Memorial Park's amphitheatre overlooks the naturalized river at 455 Royal St. E. The Listowel Historic Walking Tour, a self-guided downtown route stewarded by the North Perth Chamber of Commerce, runs through the limestone-and-brick old-town core.

Cycling

The 132 km Goderich to Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail passes east-west through the village of Monkton in North Perth, with a Trans Canada Trail-profiled corridor running from the Lake Huron shore to the western edge of Guelph; the trail was officially completed in 2021. Inside the municipality, the North Perth Trail System adds roughly 22 km of former rail right-of-way connecting Gowanstown, Listowel, Atwood, and Henfryn, with named segments including the 8.0 km Listowel to Atwood Trail and the Listowel to Gowanstown Trail. The corridors are flat former rail beds suited to gravel and touring riding through Perth County farm country.

Heritage & Culture

Listowel Paddyfest has been a town institution since 1977, organized by the Kinsmen Club of Listowel and run during the Ontario March Break — a week-and-two-weekends spread of events organizers describe as the largest Irish festival in North America. The Listowel Historic Walking Tour, a self-guided route from the Chamber of Commerce, threads the downtown heritage core; the Listowel Agricultural Fair runs every July as a long-running rural-county fair.
