Norfolk County.
Norfolk County is a single-tier municipality on Lake Erie's north shore, built around the towns of Simcoe, Port Dover, Port Rowan, Waterford, and Delhi, with Long Point — a long sandspit reaching east into the lake — defining its southern edge. Long Point was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1986 and is recognized as a globally important Important Bird Area: the peninsula concentrates spring warblers in May, fall raptors in September and October, and tundra swans staging in the Big Creek marshes in February and March.
Backus Heritage Conservation Area, south of Port Rowan, holds the Backhouse Mill (water-powered and operating since 1798) and a Carolinian old-growth tract in Backus Woods. Long Point Bay is one of the most productive warmwater fisheries in the Great Lakes basin, and Port Dover remains a working Lake Erie fishing port.
The Norfolk Sand Plain — legacy tobacco-belt sandy soils — now carries an emerging wine sub-region. Norfolk County lies within Mississaugas of the Credit treaty territory under the Between the Lakes Treaty No. 3 (1792), with Six Nations of the Grand River sitting adjacent to the north.
A short drive from Brantford and Tillsonburg, a couple of hours from Toronto and Hamilton on the major southwestern Ontario highway corridor.

Hiking
Backus Heritage Conservation Area's Old-Growth Trail loops through Backus Woods — a Carolinian remnant of tulip tree, sassafras, and shagbark hickory at the species' northern edge. Long Point Provincial Park runs short interpretive loops through dune-forest and a marsh boardwalk on the Inner Bay; Turkey Point Provincial Park trails climb through Carolinian woods on the bluff. The Lynn Valley Trail covers about 8 km of rail-trail from Simcoe to Port Dover along the Lynn River; the Waterford Heritage Trail runs roughly 7 km through the Waterford Ponds wetland complex.

Long Point Provincial Park's frontcountry campground sits inside the Carolinian dune-forest a short walk from one of Ontario's longest sand beaches. Turkey Point Provincial Park runs a frontcountry campground on the bluff above Lake Erie. Backus Heritage Conservation Area, south of Port Rowan, runs a campground inside Long Point Region Conservation Authority's heritage property, with trail access into Backus Woods. Long Point and Turkey Point bookings flow through the Ontario Parks system; Backus is booked through LPRCA.

Long Point was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1986, and the peninsula sits inside one of Canada's most-recognized Important Bird Areas — a continental-scale concentration point for spring warblers in May, fall raptors September through November, and tundra swans staging in the Big Creek marshes in February and March. Long Point Bird Observatory, operated by Birds Canada, runs banding and migration monitoring through the season. Long Point and Big Creek National Wildlife Areas (Canadian Wildlife Service) protect the peninsula's tip and the Big Creek marsh complex; Backus Woods, inland from Port Rowan, holds a Carolinian old-growth pocket of tulip tree, sassafras, and shagbark hickory at the northern edge of the zone.

The Lake Erie Waterfront Trail runs through Norfolk County between Port Dover, Turkey Point, and Long Point, and the rural concession-road grid across the Norfolk Sand Plain carries flat road and e-bike touring between the lake and the Lynn River. Norfolk's published Wine & Tour Trail strings together winery loops on cycle-friendly secondary roads, and the Lynn Valley Trail offers an 8 km rail-trail spine from Simcoe to Port Dover.

The Turkey Point Mountain Bike Club maintains a substantial singletrack network in and around Turkey Point Provincial Park — one of the notable trail systems in southwestern Ontario, run in cooperation with Ontario Parks. Trail status, openings, and any seasonal closures are managed and published by the club; a club membership or day-pass is the standard access path.

Big Creek runs through the Big Creek National Wildlife Area into the Long Point marsh complex — sheltered marsh paddling among waterfowl and tundra swans in the staging weeks. Long Point Inner Bay, behind the sandspit, opens onto sheltered SUP, kayak, and canoe water; the Lynn River through Port Dover offers a short flatwater run. Lake Erie weather can shift quickly even on the sheltered Inner Bay side; Big Creek NWA visitor protocols (Canadian Wildlife Service) apply within the wildlife area.

Port Dover Harbour Marina anchors the Lake Erie boating scene — transient and seasonal slips, fuel, and the home harbour of the Port Dover Yacht Club. Port Rowan Harbour and Turkey Point Marina open onto the sheltered Long Point Inner Bay, which protects sailing waters from open-lake weather behind the peninsula. Lake Erie storms can move quickly; small-craft routings should track the marine forecast.

Long Point Provincial Park's beach runs one of the longest sand stretches on the Lake Erie north shore, with shallow-grading water and frontcountry camping a short walk back. Turkey Point village beach sits on the shallow Inner Bay — family-friendly, warm, and protected from open-lake swells. Port Dover Beach is the urban Lake Erie beach with main-street access at the river mouth.

Long Point Bay is one of the most productive warmwater fisheries in the Great Lakes basin — the Inner Bay holds walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, yellow perch, muskellunge, northern pike, and panfish; the Outer Bay and open Lake Erie add walleye, perch, and (seasonally) rainbow trout. Port Dover is a working Lake Erie fishing port at the mouth of the Lynn River, with public launches and charter access. Long Point Inner Bay supports an ice fishery for yellow perch when ice forms — quality varies year to year. Everything sits inside Fisheries Management Zone 16 (Lake Erie east of Pointe-aux-Pins, including Long Point Bay); a current Ontario fishing licence and zone-specific seasons and limits apply.

Backus Heritage Conservation Area centres on the Backhouse Mill — a water-powered grist mill operating since 1798 — and the surrounding heritage village interpreting early-19th-century rural Ontario life. Port Dover Harbour Museum tells the Lake Erie commercial fishery story at the working port; the Eva Brook Donly Museum in Simcoe is the Norfolk Historical Society's main museum; the Delhi Tobacco Museum & Heritage Centre interprets the Sand Plain's tobacco-belt history. Port Dover's Friday the 13th motorcycle gathering — recurring on every Friday the 13th since 1981 — has become its own piece of living regional culture.
