Nature & Discovery.
Long Point was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1986 — a long sandspit reaching east into Lake Erie that concentrates spring warblers in May, fall raptors in September and October, and tundra swans staging in the Big Creek marshes in February and March. Long Point Bird Observatory, operated by Birds Canada, runs banding and migration monitoring on the peninsula.
The brief.
The peninsula sits inside one of Canada's most-recognized Important Bird Areas, and the migration calendar is the most reliable way to plan a visit: May for the spring warbler wave, September through November for fall raptor passage along the Lake Erie north shore corridor, and February–March for tundra swan staging at Big Creek National Wildlife Area. Long Point and Big Creek National Wildlife Areas (Canadian Wildlife Service) protect the peninsula tip and the Big Creek marsh complex; the tip itself is access-restricted and Long Point Provincial Park is the public-access entry.
Inland from Port Rowan, Backus Woods at Backus Heritage Conservation Area carries a Carolinian old-growth pocket of tulip tree, sassafras, and shagbark hickory at the species' northern edge — a forest interior that doesn't exist further north.
