Freshwater Fishing.
The Whirlpool drift water and the Devils Hole reach below the falls hold the iconic Ontario-side lower-Niagara salmonid fishery. The river stays unfrozen below the falls year-round, which is why the species mix is rich — chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead (rainbow trout), brown trout, lake trout, smallmouth bass and walleye all hold or run through this stretch.
Above the falls, the Chippawa stretch fishes as Fisheries Management Zone 19 warm-water river.
The brief.
The lower Niagara is a year-round fishery with seasonal peaks: chinook salmon late August through October, coho mid-October through December, steelhead November through May with peaks in fall and again in early spring (February through April), brown trout overlapping the steelhead window, smallmouth bass and walleye through the warm-water summer. An Ontario fishing licence is required.
Fisheries Management Zone 19 governs the upper Niagara above the falls (Chippawa); the lower Niagara below the falls is governed by Ontario Great Lakes regulations and is referenced in the FMZ 20 system at the river mouth at Lake Ontario — anglers should consult the FMZ summary that matches their access point. Drift fishing the Whirlpool and Devils Hole is the iconic format; access on the Canadian side is via the Niagara Glen and adjacent Niagara Parks land.
Bring layers in winter — the gorge funnels wind off the lower river.
