Nature & Discovery.

Rattray Marsh is the last remaining lakefront marsh on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario between Toronto and Burlington — 36 hectares of CVC-managed coastal wetland on the Atlantic Flyway. A boardwalk loop carries the marsh edge from Jack Darling Memorial Park west to Old Poplar Row, with spring and fall waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerines passing through.

Inland, the Riverwood Conservancy on the Credit River runs guided walks and nature programming through the MacEwan Field Station.

01 — What to know

The brief.

Rattray Marsh access is from Jack Darling Memorial Park (east entrance, paid municipal parking lot) or Old Poplar Row (west entrance, on-street parking). The boardwalk loop is roughly 1 km; expect heavy crowds on weekends and during spring/fall migration peaks.

Spring waterfowl peak is late March through April; fall passerine and shorebird migration is September through October. Cycling and dogs off-leash are NOT permitted on the marsh boardwalk.

The Riverwood Conservancy, on a 60-ha riverside property partnered between the City, CVC, and the Riverwood Conservancy non-profit, runs MacEwan Field Station programming including environmental education and a horticultural therapy programme; the property also has formal gardens and the river-edge Culham Trail. Free entry at both sites.
