01 — Abstract

Mississauga sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Peel Region, west of Toronto, with the Credit River running through the centre of the city and emptying at Port Credit. The Mississauga reach of the Waterfront Trail runs roughly 22 km along Lake Ontario from Marie Curtis Park at the Toronto boundary west through Lakefront Promenade Park, Port Credit, J.C.

Saddington Park, Richard's Memorial Park, Jack Darling Memorial Park, and the Rattray Marsh boardwalk to Joshua's Creek at the Oakville line. The Culham Trail runs another 13 km north along the east bank of the Credit River from the 91-hectare Erindale Park through the Riverwood Conservancy to Streetsville Memorial Park at the Brampton boundary.

Rattray Marsh, managed by Credit Valley Conservation, is the last remaining lakefront marsh on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario between Toronto and Burlington — a 36-hectare coastal wetland on the Atlantic Flyway. The City manages roughly 500 parks and 300 km of on- and off-road trails across the municipality.

Mississauga is named for the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Anishinaabe Nation whose ancestral territory included the lower Credit River watershed; the Nation's reserve relocated to New Credit, near Hagersville, in the 1840s and is not within the city's current municipal boundaries, but the Treaty Lands and Territory framing is foundational to the place. Downtown Toronto is roughly 30 minutes by car or GO Transit; Oakville is immediately west.

Nature & Discovery

Rattray Marsh, on the lakeshore between Jack Darling Memorial Park and Sheridan Creek, is a 36-hectare Credit Valley Conservation property and the last remaining lakefront marsh on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario between Toronto and Burlington. The boardwalk loop through the marsh sits on the Atlantic Flyway and carries spring and fall waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerines. The Riverwood Conservancy on the Credit River runs guided walks, a horticultural therapy programme, and environmental education through MacEwan Field Station on a 60-hectare riverside property partnered between the City, CVC, and the Riverwood Conservancy non-profit.

Cycling

The Mississauga segment of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail carries the lakefront from Marie Curtis west to Joshua's Creek as a mix of paved off-road trail and signed on-road sections through Port Credit village. The Culham Trail runs 13 km of crushed-stone and asphalt along the east bank of the Credit River from Erindale Park through Riverwood to Streetsville Memorial Park at the Brampton line — the city's primary off-road cycling spine along the river. The two corridors anchor a citywide network of about 300 km of on- and off-road trails connecting Lakeshore Road, the Mississauga Road / Hurontario corridors, and the Etobicoke Creek Trail at the Toronto boundary.

Paddling — Flatwater

Erindale Park is the primary canoe / kayak put-in on the lower Credit River, with about 7 km of seasonal flatwater downstream to the river mouth at Port Credit. The Old Erindale Dam remnants are visible in low water and worth scouting. On the lake side, sheltered launches at Lakefront Promenade Park (a 33-hectare park with three artificial islands and lagoons) and the Port Credit Harbour Marina at the Credit River mouth open onto the Mississauga shoreline of Lake Ontario. The lower Credit run depends on spring through early summer flows; mid-summer levels can drop too low to float.

Freshwater Fishing

The Credit River within Mississauga sits in Fisheries Management Zone 16 (Lake Ontario tributaries), with extended migratory seasons for chinook salmon, brown trout, and steelhead during the fall ascent (September through October for chinook) and the spring run (steelhead March through May); access runs from the river mouth at Port Credit upstream through Erindale and Streetsville. The Lake Ontario shoreline falls in FMZ 20: year-round Atlantic salmon (must exceed 63 cm) and the standard Great Lakes calendar for bass and walleye, fishable from the city's piers at Port Credit and Lakefront Promenade. FMZ 16 sanctuary closures and a one-trout daily limit apply on the Credit; check the current Ontario regulations for year-specific dates.

Wildlife Viewing

The Credit River carries a fall chinook salmon and spring steelhead migratory run between Lake Ontario and the Caledon hills upstream, with in-city overlooks at Streetsville Memorial Park and Erindale Park during the September-through-October chinook ascent. On the lakeshore, the Rattray Marsh boardwalk is the city's primary spring and fall bird-migration stopover — a coastal wetland on the Atlantic Flyway with the only remaining lakefront marsh habitat on the Canadian shore between Toronto and Burlington. Lakefront Promenade Park's sheltered lagoons round out the lakefront waterfowl stops.
