The Friends of Wye Marsh manage 3,000 acres of provincially significant Class 1 wetland next door, with year-round boardwalks and an observation tower, and groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails in winter. The Midland Rotary Waterfront Trail runs along Midland Bay through downtown and connects east to the Tay Shore Trail — 18.5 km paved through Port McNicoll, Victoria Harbour, and Waubaushene as part of the Trans Canada Trail and the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail.

Out of Midland Town Dock, Georgian Bay's 30,000 Islands archipelago opens to the north, with Beausoleil Island and the southern islands of Georgian Bay Islands National Park within paddle range. Midland sits on the traditional territory of the Wendat (Huron-Wendat Nation), the Anishinaabe, and the Métis (Huronia Métis Council).
