01 — Abstract

London sits at the Forks of the Thames, where the north and south branches of the Thames River meet in downtown Ontario. The Thames Valley Parkway — a paved, non-motorized multi-use path approximately 40 km long — follows the river through the city, threading Springbank Park (140 ha) and Storybook Gardens, Harris Park at the Forks, Gibbons Park near Western University, and Kilally Meadows on the north branch.

Upstream on the north branch, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority manages the 1,012-hectare Fanshawe Conservation Area on Fanshawe Lake — the city's main camping, swimming, and flatwater paddling anchor. Downtown, the Heritage Conservation District runs through Victoria Park to Eldon House (1834) and Museum London at the Forks; Banting House National Historic Site at 442 Adelaide Street North marks the residence where Frederick Banting conceived the idea behind the discovery of insulin in October 1920.

Boler Mountain, on the southwest edge in Byron, runs a small downhill ski hill, tubing, and a summer treetop adventure park. London is a couple of hours from Toronto and from Detroit/Windsor along Highway 401.

Hiking

The Thames Valley Parkway runs approximately 40 km of paved riverside path through the City of London, connecting Springbank Park, Harris Park at the Forks, Gibbons Park, and Kilally Meadows along the north and south branches of the Thames. Off the main spine, four Environmentally Significant Areas — Westminster Ponds / Pond Mills in the south, Sifton Bog on the west side, Medway Valley Heritage Forest in the north, and Kilally Meadows along the north branch — carry quieter Carolinian-forest walking. Upstream, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority's Fanshawe Conservation Area trail network runs through 1,012 hectares around Fanshawe Lake.

Walking & Strolling

Springbank Park covers 140 hectares along the Thames south of downtown and contains Storybook Gardens; the Thames Valley Parkway threads it on its way through the city. Downtown, the Heritage Conservation District runs from Victoria Park through Eldon House (1834) — London's oldest residence, operated as a museum by Museum London — to Museum London itself at the Forks of the Thames. Harris Park sits at the Forks; Gibbons Park lies upstream near Western University. The cluster is flat, paved, and connected, which makes downtown London a comfortable walking city in any season.

Camping

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority operates the campground at Fanshawe Conservation Area on the shore of Fanshawe Lake — frontcountry car-camping with serviced and unserviced sites on 1,012 hectares of UTRCA land in the northeast of the city. The campground sits next to the swimming beach, paddle launches, and trail network, which makes Fanshawe the city's main combined camp-and-day-use base. Reservations through UTRCA; the campground operates seasonally, typically May through mid-October.

Cycling

The Thames Valley Parkway carries cyclists approximately 40 km along the Thames River through the City of London on a paved, non-motorized path, threading Springbank Park, Harris Park at the Forks, and Gibbons Park near Western University before continuing north to Kilally Meadows on the north branch. North of the city, the Fanshawe Conservation Area perimeter adds reservoir-edge cycling on UTRCA-managed land. The route stays inside city limits — it is the regional cycling spine for daily and recreational use.
