Hiking.
Lake St. Peter Provincial Park anchors the in-municipality hiking inventory at the south gate of Algonquin country — the 2.5-kilometre Lookout Trail climbs strenuously to a viewpoint over the lake and the 4-kilometre Cabin Trail loops through forest to an abandoned log cabin.
East of Bancroft, Egan Chutes Provincial Park sends the York River through three named drops — Egan Chute, Flat Rapids, and Farm Chute — past Mammoth Rock and the York River Tactite Zone.
The brief.
The two named Lake St. Peter Provincial Park trails are short for the time investment because both are rated strenuous on Shield bedrock — the Lookout Trail covers 2.5 kilometres in roughly 1.5 hours and the Cabin Trail 4 kilometres in roughly 2 hours.
The park itself operates seasonally, with 2026 dates running May 8 through October 13. At Egan Chutes Provincial Park the east-side trail runs about 8 kilometres out-and-back through the three chutes (~2 hours moderate); a shorter west-side trail of 1.7 kilometres reaches the first chute.
The Hastings Heritage Trail's northern terminus sits at Lake St. Peter — the 156-kilometre EOTA corridor heads south through Maynooth and Birds Creek toward Glen Ross.
Walking, jogging, skiing, and biking on the Heritage Trail are free; ATV and dirtbike use require an EOTA pass. Mineral collecting is prohibited inside Egan Chutes Provincial Park, and the chutes themselves have no guard rails.
