Freshwater Fishing.
The Baptiste–Elephant–Benoir tri-lakes are the township's marquee fishery — Baptiste Lake holds lake trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, pike, and yellow perch across a 61-kilometre perimeter and 103-foot maximum depth, with pike now dominant after displacing the historic muskie. Hastings Highlands sits in Fisheries Management Zone 15 within the Central Bait Management Zone.
The brief.
FMZ 15 sets the seasons across all Hastings Highlands waters: smallmouth and largemouth bass open the 4th Saturday of June through November 30 (S-6 / C-2), walleye January 1 through March 15 plus 3rd Saturday of May through December 31, and lake trout January 1 through September 30. The Central Bait Management Zone restricts movement of live or dead baitfish and leeches into or out of the zone.
Beyond Baptiste–Elephant–Benoir, the township's smaller lakes — Papineau, Salmon Trout, Graphite, Diamond — each have a municipal boat launch listed by Hastings Highlands. The York River corridor through Egan Chutes Provincial Park adds a stream-and-pool option; the lower York carries a fish sanctuary downstream toward the Madawaska confluence per the FMZ 15 page.
Many lakes carry waterbody-specific overrides on top of FMZ 15 seasons — check the regulations summary before fishing.
