Guelph.
Guelph is a mid-sized city at the confluence of the Speed and Eramosa rivers in Wellington County, laid out by John Galt in 1827 on an unusual radial street grid centred on St. George's Square.
The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate — Joseph Connolly's 1888 Gothic Revival church on Catholic Hill — was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990 and anchors the downtown skyline. McCrae House, John McCrae's birthplace at 108 Water Street, is a separate National Historic Site, and the Goldie Mill ruins on the Speed River carry the remains of a 19th-century limestone grist mill ruined by fire in the mid-20th century.
North of the city, Guelph Lake Conservation Area covers about 1,623 hectares around a reservoir on the Speed River behind the 1976 Guelph Dam — the city's main camping, swimming, and lake-paddling anchor, and home to a Nordic ski centre in winter. Inside the city, the Speed and Eramosa rivers thread Royal City Park, Riverside Park, and Goldie Mill, and the University of Guelph Arboretum runs 165 hectares of free interpretive trails on the east side of campus.
Guelph sits on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit and the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Attawandaron peoples.

Hiking
The University of Guelph Arboretum runs 165 hectares of trails on the east side of campus, including the J.C. Taylor Nature Reserve and rare and threatened tree collections — free, open daily, and the easiest stretch of woods-and-meadow walking inside the city. The Speed River Trail and Royal Recreation Trail thread the riverside corridor through downtown, linking Riverside Park, Goldie Mill, and Royal City Park; together they form the spine of the urban hiking network. Guelph Lake Conservation Area, ten minutes north, adds reservoir-side trails on the lake's day-use grounds.

Downtown Guelph's John Galt 1827 radial street plan, centred on St. George's Square, makes the heritage core legibly walkable — Quebec Street and the Old Quebec Street Mall, Wyndham Street's heritage commercial block, and Catholic Hill all sit on the same compact downtown grid. The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate anchors the hill above St. George's Square; McCrae House is a short walk west along Water Street; Goldie Mill ruins sit just upstream on the Speed. The Speed River Trail runs along the river through Royal City Park and on to Riverside Park to the north.

Guelph Lake Conservation Area is the city's frontcountry camping anchor — a Grand River Conservation Authority property covering about 1,623 hectares around the reservoir on the Speed River north of town. The campground runs reservable serviced and unserviced sites May through October, with the swimming beach, day-use area, and paddling launches all on the same property. There is no other frontcountry campground inside the city.

The University of Guelph Arboretum's 165 hectares — open daily, free, on the east side of campus — runs interpretive walks through the J.C. Taylor Nature Reserve, the gosling wildlife sanctuary, and the rare and threatened tree collections. Guelph Lake Conservation Area, north of town, opens reservoir wetland and shoreline birding through migration windows; springs and falls bring waterfowl and shorebirds to the lake's quieter coves. Inside the city, the Speed River corridor through Royal City Park and Goldie Mill carries riverside songbird and waterfowl viewing.

The Royal Recreation Trail runs along the Speed River through downtown, connecting Riverside Park north of the core to Royal City Park and on to the south end of the city — the spine of the urban cycling network. The Trans Canada Trail crosses Guelph along the same Speed River corridor. North of the city, rural Wellington County concession roads link Guelph to Centre Wellington (Fergus and Elora) along light-traffic county roads, and Guelph Lake Conservation Area carries lake-loop and grassland trail riding inside the property.

Guelph sits at the confluence of the Speed and Eramosa rivers, and both carry urban flatwater paddling through the city — the Speed runs gently past Royal City Park and Goldie Mill, the Eramosa joins from the east, and the combined stretch flows on through Riverside Park and toward Cambridge. Ten minutes north of downtown, Guelph Lake Conservation Area opens onto a reservoir on the Speed River behind the 1976 Guelph Dam — the Grand River Conservation Authority runs the lake's paddle access, with rentals and a launch from the day-use area. The city's two-river confluence inside the urban core, paired with the reservoir north of town, is unusual for southern Ontario.

The Guelph Farmers' Market, operating at 2 Gordon Street since 1827, is one of Canada's oldest continuously operating farmers' markets and runs Saturday mornings year-round. Wellington Brewery, founded in Guelph in 1985, is one of Canada's oldest independent craft breweries and is one of two downtown craft taprooms; Royal City Brewing is the other, and Dixon's Distilled Spirits is the city's craft distillery. Heritage Wyndham Street and the Old Quebec Street Mall carry the bulk of the downtown food and drink district.

The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate, designed by Joseph Connolly and completed in 1888, was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990 — Connolly's twin-spired Gothic Revival church on Catholic Hill is the city's defining downtown landmark. McCrae House, the birthplace of John McCrae, sits at 108 Water Street as a separate National Historic Site operated by Guelph Museums. The Guelph Civic Museum is in the former Loretto Convent (1853) on Catholic Hill beside the Basilica. Downtown's radial street plan — laid out by John Galt in 1827 around St. George's Square — is itself an unusual artifact of Upper Canadian settlement design, and the Goldie Mill ruins on the Speed River carry a 19th-century limestone grist-mill shell as a riverside city park.
