Cycling.

The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail runs through Central Elgin along the Lake Erie shore, threading through Port Stanley and connecting east toward Port Bruce and west toward Port Glasgow on quiet secondary roads. The Sunset Drive corridor between St.

Thomas and Port Stanley is the spine for road riders heading down to the lake, and the rural Elgin County concession-road grid offers flat, low-traffic touring through farm country and the Sparta wine cluster.

Cycling in Central Elgin
01 — What to know

The brief.

Central Elgin's cycle-touring is built around three patterns: the Waterfront Trail along the Lake Erie shore (lake views, mostly paved or gravel-shoulder secondary roads), the Sunset Drive spine north–south between the lake and St. Thomas, and the Sparta-area concession-road grid that ties together the inland wineries and the Heritage Conservation District.

Lake Erie wind exposure is real on the open-shore segments — routes can be planned to put a tailwind on the long leg. May through October is the comfortable window.
