Paddling — Flatwater.
The Grand River from Cambridge downstream to Paris is a popular flatwater and Class I canoe and kayak corridor, with common access at Riverside Park in Preston and at Glen Morris and a standard take-out at Paris. Inside the city, Shade's Mills Reservoir adds a sheltered flatwater option for paddleboarding and short canoe trips on 365 hectares of GRCA-managed water.
The brief.
The Cambridge–Paris stretch runs Class I in normal flow, with riffles that can become hazardous in spring high water — May through October is the practical paddling window, and April trips should be informed by Grand River Conservation Authority flow data. Riverside Park in Preston is the most accessible Cambridge put-in (the Speed joins the Grand here); Glen Morris is a common mid-trip access point a short distance south.
Shade's Mills Reservoir is a GRCA day-use water on the city's east edge with a beach, a boat launch, and a day-use fee at the gatehouse — a standard sheltered choice for first-time paddlers and a learning surface for SUP. The Speed River below Hespeler runs a short flatwater reach into the Riverside Park confluence.
