01 — What to know

The brief.

The Mill Race Trail and the Walter Bean Trail through Cambridge are paved or stone-dust riverside paths and stay walkable year-round; spring high water on the Grand can flood low sections briefly. Shade's Mills sits on the city's east edge and operates on Grand River Conservation Authority park rules with a day-use fee at the gatehouse; trails there are multi-use (walking, running, cycling, equestrian on permitted segments).

The Cambridge–Paris Rail Trail's south-Cambridge trailhead at Glen Morris Road / Newman Drive is the most common starting point for the rail-trail corridor toward Paris. Best season is May through October; the Mill Race and Walter Bean stay accessible into shoulder season and through most winters.
