Heritage & Culture.
The Galt Heritage Conservation District protects a limestone commercial core along Main Street and Water Street in downtown Galt, with the Idea Exchange Old Post Office anchoring it as a heritage public library and gallery network. The Cambridge Sculpture Garden runs along the Grand River through Soper Park, and downtown Hespeler's former textile-mill district extends the heritage geography north along the Speed River.
The brief.
The 1973 amalgamation that created Cambridge merged three independent mill towns — Galt on the Grand, Preston on the Speed, and Hespeler on the upper Speed — and each retains its own heritage commercial core. Galt's is the largest and most concentrated, with a city-designated Heritage Conservation District, the Idea Exchange Old Post Office (a heritage public library and maker space), and the Cambridge Sculpture Garden along the Grand.
Preston centres on King Street and Riverside Park; Hespeler on the Hespeler Mill core. Idea Exchange operates branches in all three downtowns.
Most heritage walking is comfortable May through October with cooler shoulder-season options.
