Heritage & Culture.

Caledon's historic mill villages give the heritage layer its anchor: Belfountain on the West Credit (1880s Trimble Mill ruins, suspension bridge, ornamental gardens inside Belfountain Conservation Area), Alton (the 1881 woollen mill restored as the Alton Mill Arts Centre, with artist studios and galleries beside the Mill Pond), Cheltenham (19th-century mill-village fabric and the Cheltenham General Store), and Inglewood. The Caledon Trailway, on the abandoned Toronto, Grey & Bruce railway grade, threads many of these villages across the town.

Heritage & Culture in Caledon
01 — What to know

The brief.

The mill-village heritage runs along the Credit River corridor — Belfountain, Cheltenham, and Inglewood on the West Credit and main Credit; Alton further north on the upper headwaters. Each village retains 19th-century building fabric of varying preservation; Belfountain CA preserves explicit Trimble Mill ruins and the 1900s Charles W.

Mack ornamental gardens with the suspension bridge over the West Credit cascade. Alton Mill Arts Centre is the most-developed indoor heritage product — the 1881 woollen mill restored by private owners now houses 20+ artist studios and galleries plus a café, and stays open year-round.

The Caledon Trailway's 36-kilometre run from Terra Cotta to Palgrave on the abandoned Toronto, Grey & Bruce railway grade is itself a heritage corridor; interpretive signage marks the rail history at trailheads. Caledon sits on Treaty 19 (the 1818 Ajetance Purchase) territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and the Town of Caledon's land acknowledgement also names Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat traditional territory.

May through October for full village access; Alton Mill stays year-round.
