Nature & Discovery.
Heart Lake Conservation Area is a 168-hectare TRCA property on a glacial kettle lake — formed when a buried block of Wisconsin-glaciation ice melted and the surrounding sediments collapsed inward — with the surrounding upland forest carrying spring waterfowl and fall passerine migration. Claireville Conservation Area, the largest CA in the GTA at 848 hectares, covers West Humber wetlands, meadow, and reservoir habitat at the shared Brampton/Toronto/Vaughan boundary.
Both run TRCA-led environmental-education programming.
The brief.
TRCA programming at Heart Lake includes seasonal nature walks, summer camp at the day-use area, and Treetop Trekking (privately operated, separate entry). Claireville's environmental education runs through the TRCA's Claireville Field Centre on the Toronto side; Brampton-side natural-history access is self-directed along the West Humber trails.
Spring waterfowl peak is late March through April on the Heart Lake kettle and the Claireville reservoir; fall passerine migration runs September through October through the upland forest at both sites. Eldorado Park's riparian woodland on the Credit River carries a third corridor at the Halton Hills boundary.
Free or modest TRCA day-use fee; both sites are accessible by Brampton Transit / Züm BRT plus a short walk.
